Chennai, Apr 12: Chaos ruled the highway connecting Tamil Nadu's capital with Tiruchirapalli for several hours on Thursday morning as hundreds of cadre belonging to various political outfits blocked the roads and displayed black fags in protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's day-long visit.

Giant balloons in black colour with "GoBackModi" written all over them were released at various locations near the Chennai Airport, where Modi's special aircraft landed around 9.30 am on Thursday, even as ace directors Bharathiraaja, Ameer and Vetri Maran landed at the arrival area of the airport and shouted slogans against the Prime Minister's visit.

Major roads leading the airport witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic as vehicles moved at a snail pace for more than 4 kilometres, causing severe inconvenience to thousands of people, especially fliers. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's vehicle was caught in the heavy traffic snarl and he was forced to walk more than a kilometre to reach the airport to welcome the Prime Minister, who later flew to Thiruvidanthai, 40 km from here, to inaugurate the Defence Expo.

The outfits are protesting Modi's visit accusing him of acting against the interests of Tamil Nadu by delaying setting up of Cauvery Management Board with an eye on May 12 Karnataka Elections. The call which was first given by principal Opposition DMK was lapped up by almost every other outfit barring the ruling AIADMK, its splinter group led by T T V Dhinakaran and the BJP which jumped into the fray to show black flags to the visiting Prime Minister.

Black flags were hoisted atop the residences of top Opposition leaders, including those belonging to DMK chief M Karunanidhi and working president M K Stalin, since Thursday morning, even as cadre belonging to fringe outfit, Tamizhaga Vaazhurimai Katchi, released giant balloons in black in large numbers to show their protest against the Prime Minister's visit.

Cadres of Naam Tamizhar climbed onto giant hoardings in the vicinity of the Airport and showed black flags. Though the Prime Minister will avoid stepping onto major roads, the protesters said their agitation was symbolic but powerful since thousands of common people were on the streets protesting the delay in constituting Cauvery Management Board.

Black was the colour of the day as Stalin, his allies Thol Thirumavalavan, R Mutharasan, G Ramakrishnan and other leaders continued their Cauvery Rights Retrieval walk for the sixth day clad in black shirts. Though the city police had made elaborate security arrangements, groups of protesters sneaked into the airport and shouted slogans against Modi's visit.

Unwilling to take chances, the Special Protection Group (SPG) that guards the Prime Minister and the Chennai Police made several changes to Modi's itinerary to avoid his cavalcade on the main roads. After inaugurating the Defence Expo, Modi will take a chopper to reach Chennai to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Adyar Cancer Institute.

To avoid getting onto the Sardar Patel Road, a wall connecting the Cancer Institute with Children's Park has been demolished to ensure direct entry into the hospital from IIT-Madras, where the Prime Minister's chopper will land. The chopper will land at the cricket ground of the prestigious institution raising the hackles of environmentalists who say landing of the helicopter will cause massive stress to animals in the campus and at the Guindy National Park located just metres away.

New Delhi, Mar 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that people should not think of COVID-19 quarantine facilities as a prison and spoke with two survivors of the infection during his radio show 'Mann Ki Baat' to establish that it was curable.
The Prime Minister spoke to coronavirus survivors -- Ramagampa Teja and Ashok Kapoor - and urged them to share their success against the infection with people.
The Prime Minister asked people to listen to the survivors who had successfully defeated the coronavirus.
"I have spoken to a few people who were infected from the virus and speaking to such people. While I tried to boost their morale they also lifted my spirits when I talked to them," he said.
Speaking to the Prime Minister during the show, Ramagampa Teja, an IT professional, who tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from Dubai, said that he was frightened when he tested positive for the disease and could not believe that this has happened to him.
He said even his family was very stressed after finding out his COVID-19 positive status. "But their test results came negative, which I took as a great blessing. And since then, there were improvements every day," he said.
Teja was admitted to a government hospital in Hyderabad and was released after 14 days as he successfully overcame the infection. "The first few days were the hardest but the dedicated doctors and nurses at the hospital ensured that I recovered," he added.
He asked people not to be afraid of being quarantined. "People feel that going into quarantine means going to prison. They should know that the government quarantine is for them and their families. I want to emphasise that people must get tested and do not fear quarantine," he added.
The Prime Minister congratulated him and his family and asked him to share an audio clip of his experience. "I would like you to make an audio of your experiences and share it on social media so that it goes viral and removes fear from people's minds," the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister also spoke to another coronavirus survivor, Ashok Kapoor, six members of whose family in Agra were tested positive for the deadly virus.
On being asked by the Prime Minister whether they had feared for their lives, Kapoor said, "We were not scared as we received excellent cooperation from the doctors and support staff at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital."
The six of them were shifted to Delhi and put under quarantine for 14 days where all of them successfully recovered from the infection.
The Prime Minister also commended the spirit of Ashok Kapoor and said: "Your experience came in handy for all. My best wishes to you and your family."
He also urged the Kapoor family to spread awareness regarding COVID-19 in the way they see fit. "Please spread awareness your way and you can feed whoever is hungry, look out for the poor and also spread awareness to people urging them to follow the rules," the Prime Minister said.
"If everyone follows the rules, the country will be saved," the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister also thanked the people involved in ensuring the continuous supply of goods and services in the country and advised them to "follow all the safety precautions, take care of themselves and their family members."
Earlier in his address, Modi had asked for the forgiveness of all countrymen, and especially the poor, for the nationwide lockdown in the country in the view of the novel coronavirus. He had then termed it a necessary measure needed to defeat the infection in India.

Kochi, Apr 16: A middle-aged man carrying his ailing father on his shoulders walked close to one-kilometre in Kerala’s Punalur when the autorickshaw he was driving was allegedly stopped by the police over the ongoing lockdown. He was bringing back his father from the hospital after he was discharged on Wednesday.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the man can be seen carrying his bare-bodied father on the shoulders and struggling to handle the weight while a woman carrying the hospital documents, prescriptions and other items, is running along with him.

The incident took place in Punalur town of Kollam district.

The 65-year-old man, a native of Kulathupuzha, was released from the Punalur Taluk Hospital and his son was taking him home when he was stopped on the road. The man has alleged that even after he produced hospital documents, the police refused to let him pass with the autorickshaw.

The vehicle was stopped about a kilometre from their house in the middle of a traffic jam and the family had to walk the rest of the path. He said even after he told the police and showed papers from hospital he was not allowed to go.

After the video went viral in Kerala, the state human rights commission took suo motu cognizance of the incident.

The nationwide lockdown has prevented all non-essential movement in the public space while medical emergencies have been allowed. The extended lockdown will now continue till May 3.

According to the police, the vehicle did not have the patient when it was stopped. The driver was asked to show a declaration document.

He stepped out of the vehicle and walked to the hospital which was 200 metres from the checkpoint and returned carrying his father on the back, said the police.

New Delhi, Jan 31: Slamming the BJP over the Jamia firing incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said such incidents were possible with the ruling party's leaders inciting people to shoot, and asked Prime minister Narendra Modi to answer whether he stands with violence or non-violence.

Her attack on the government comes a day after tensions in the Jamia area spiralled on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a student, before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting "Yeh lo aazadi" amid heavy police presence in the area.

"When the BJP government ministers and party leaders incite people to shoot, give provocative speeches, then all this becomes possible. The Prime Minister should answer what kind of a Delhi he wants to build?" Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Does the PM stand with violence or non-violence, she asked.

"Does he stand with development or with anarchy?" the Congress general secretary said.
