Maulana Abdul Bari Nadvi passes away; Pall of gloom descends on Bhatkal

Bhatkal, Feb 18: Maulana Abdul Bari Nadvi, an Islamic scholar and symbol of peace and co-existence in Bhatkal, passed away after a couple of months of illness at private hospital in the coastal city of Mangaluru on Wednesday.

The demise of 54-year-old scholar, who was the principal of Jamia Islamia Educational Institutions and Khatheeb of Jamia Masjid for several years, came as a shock to the entire town of Bhatkal.

The end came at around 4:30p.m. and the mortal remains of the departed soul were brought back to Bhatkal at 9:30 p.m. Thousands of mourners including socio political leaders gathered in the vicinity of the house and waited late into the night to get a glimpse of the deceased.

As soon as the sad news began to spread, the people of Bhatkal voluntarily closed down their shops and businesses as a mark of respect. Bhatkalis in Middle Eastern countries too closed down their shops.

Meanwhile, Majlis-e-Islah-wa-Tanzeem, a prominent body of Bhatkal Muslims, declared holiday for all Muslim educational institutions in Bhatkal.

Well known for his Juma Khutbah (Friday sermons) for three decades and eloquent way of reciting Qur’an, Maulana had thousands of fans and followers in and around the town. He served as the imam of Jamia Masjid for over 32 years.

After completing his education in Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, a prestigious Islamic education institution based in Lucknow, he joined Jamia Islamia in 1983 as a teacher of theology and Islamic studies. As its principal for the last 15 years, he was instrumental in making it one of the best centres for religious education in south India.

Several socio-cultural and religious organizations of Bhatkal and groups of nonresident Bhatkal people from across the world have expressed deep grief over Maulana’s demise.

The janazah prayer will be held on Thursday at 10 am at Jamia Masjid and he will be laid to rest at the cemetery in Takiya street.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: Karnataka government has announced a complete lockdown on Sundays till August 2. "There shall be complete lockdown on Sundays from July 5 and followed by next four Sundays till August 2," stated the government. 

"However, essential activities allowed during night curfew will be permitted during Sunday lockdown too. Marriages already fixed on Sundays will be permitted as per norms," also said.

The government further ordered, "All government offices, Boards and Corporations, except those operating and maintaining essential services, shall remain closed on all Saturdays till the second week of August."

Employers should ensure that the Aarogya Setu app is downloaded and used by the employees. The app enables the identification of potential risk of infection,

Regarding Sunday Lockdown, it said, there shall be complete lockdown on Sundays with effect from 5th July, 2020, and followed by next 4 Sundays till 2nd August, 2020.

However, the essential activities as above permitted during Night Curfew shall be permitted during the Sunday lockdown also.

Lockdown in Containment Zones in Karnataka

Lockdown will continue to remain in force in the Containment zones. In the Containment Zones, only essential activities shall be allowed. There shall be strict perimeter control to ensure that there is no movement of people in or out of these zones, except for medical emergencies and for facilitating supply of essential goods and services. In the Containment Zones, there shall be intensive contact tracing, house-to-house surveillance, and other clinical interventions, as required.

All vulnerable persons, individuals above 65, persons with comorbidities, pregnant women and children below the age of 10 years are advised to stay at home, except for health and essential purposes.

Karnataka saw 947 new coronavirus cases, including 503 cases from Bengaluru Urban, taking the total number of cases to 15,242. Death toll has jumped to 246 after 20 deaths were reported on Tuesday, according to the data released by Union Health Ministry.

Bengaluru, Jul 15: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D K Shivakumar on Tuesday alleged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa led state government of corruption and said it had not spared even beds and pillows meant for COVID-19 patients to make "corrupt" money.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Congress leader said BJP government will be exposed in the coming days.

"It is nauseating that @BSYBJP govt has not even spared the beds and pillows meant for CoVid patients to make corrupt money from. There are many such scams involving ministers. Evidences about them will be placed before people and the BJP Govt will be exposed in the coming days," he tweeted.

Cabinet minister Jagadish Shettar on Monday announced a complete lockdown in Karnataka's Dharwad area from 10 am on July 15 to 8 pm on July 24 in a bid to control the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

According to the State's health department, Karnataka has a total of 41,581 positive cases so far, including 24,572 active cases and 16,248 recoveries.

So far, 757 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in the State.

Kalaburagi, Apr 20: With no COVID-19 case reported here on Sunday, the total number of virus-infected people in the district stood at 22.

While three persons have succumbed to the infection in the district so far, three others have been cured and discharged.

"No COVID-19 case was reported in Kalaburagi district today. Total 22 positive cases and 3 deaths have been reported in the district till date. Three persons have been cured," said District Magistrate B. Sharat.

Karnataka's total count of coronavirus patients has surged to 390, said the State Health Department on Sunday.

"Six new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the State from 5 pm on Saturday till 5 pm on Sunday. Cumulatively, 390 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state," it said.
