Mayor raids illegal massage parlours, skill game centres across Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jul 11: After much hue and cry from activists and public, Mangaluru Mayor Kavita Sanil along with a team of officials on Tuesday raided a few massage parlours and silk game centres operating illegally in different parts of the city. This is the second such raid by the first lady of the city in last one week.

The officials first raided Olive Leaf Ayurvedic Therapy Centre at Bejai, wherein two girls were “rescued”. The team later carried out raids in Attaravar, Balmatta and other areas of the city.

The officials sealed the premises following the raid as the parlours had no trade licence. Ms Sanil said that she will have a detailed review of the records pertaining to the raided buildings. She also called Police Commissioner T R Suresh over phone and reported the alleged illegal activity.

Last week, the Mayor had raided a skill game centre near Ambedkar Circle in the city following a complaint by a woman about her son spending her hard earned money there. More details are awaited.

8 people detained for trying to hoist 'Uttara Karnataka flag'

Belgaum, Jan 1: Police detained a group of around eight people who were allegedly trying to hoist 'Uttara Karnataka flag' in Hire Bagewadi area here on Wednesday.

This comes amid tensions between Karnataka and neighbouring Maharashtra over the border issue with protests on both sides, which have also led to the cancellation of bus services between the two states.

Protesters in Belagavi burnt an effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, following which Shiv Sena workers had launched a protest near the Kolhapur bus stand on Sunday, and burnt an effigy of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

The long-standing border dispute between the two states over is pending before the Supreme Court for several years.

On December 7, Thackeray had chaired a high-level meeting over the border dispute between two states. It was decided in the meeting that attempts will be made to get fast track hearing in Supreme Court on the issue.

Mangaluru | Youth inhumanly drags father from lodge, escapes after abandoning him on road

Mangaluru, June 29: An elderly man, who was under quarantine at a lodge was inhumanly dragged on the floor and abandoned on the roadside by his own son.

The shocking incident occurred in broad daylight at Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city today.

The father and son are said to be natives of Uppala in Kasaragod district. The duo stayed in a hotel room at Deralakatte after returning from Mumbai a few days ago.

Today the son dragged his father mercilessly on the floor and escaped after abandoning him on the road side. A CCTV camera has captured the incident.

The jurisdictional Konaje police are trying trace the miscreant.

Veerappan's daughter Vidya Rani Joins BJP

Krishnagiri, Feb 24: Vidya Rani, daughter of dead sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, joined the BJP on Saturday at an event organised in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri.

Party general secretary Muralidhar Rao and former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan were present at the event.

"I want to work for the poor and underprivileged irrespective of their caste and religion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schemes are for the people and I want to take them to the people," said Vidya Rani.

Besides Vidya Rani, the event saw as many as 1,000 members from other political parties join the BJP.
