Mangaluru, Oct 18: The Mangaluru City Corporation and the giant industries that operate heavy bullet tankers on Suratkal-Kana-MRPL Road have finally reached an accord to repair 4.5 km long stretch.

In a meeting convened by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Monday, Mangaluru Mayor Harinath, MRPL officials and some councillors agreed in principle to repair the road first with funds drawn from the share of major industries using the road and also from the civic body.

Mr Kateel convened the meeting two days after Mr Harinath wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct MRPL to repair the road using its corporate social responsibility fund.

The Mayor later said that it was decided to hold another round of meeting on Friday by inviting more stakeholders using the particular road which is in pathetic condition.

The Mayor said that the MP promised that officials of HPCL, BASF and other industries using the road would be invited to Friday's meeting and their share of fund would be decided there.

The officials who participated in Monday's meeting estimated that it might require about Rs. 1.50 crore to repair the road now.

The Mayor said that if the same road was to be concreted, it might require Rs. 45 crore. Some in the meeting suggested that after concreting the road, toll could be collected from the users. No decision has been taken yet.

It may be recalled here that, the Mayor on October 4 had threatened of sitting in dharna in front of MRPL if the company did not start repair work within 20 days. He blamed the company for the bad condition of the road.

Bengaluru, Feb 8: The BJP on Saturday drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020.

The video, which appears to have been taken from one of the polling booths in Delhi on Saturday, shows burqa-clad women flashing their voter ID cards. While the threatening tone of the tweet is unmissable, the tweet contradicts the government's statement that no person needs to submit any documents during the house-to-house survey for updating the National Population Register (NPR) and that information provided by individuals would be accepted and recorded.

The tweet has added to the prevailing confusion regarding the NPR exercise in the country.

The NPR is a list of "usual residents" of the country. In 2010, the data for NPR was collected along with the house-listing phase of the Census of India 2011. The data was updated in 2015 by conducting a door-to-door survey.

Currently, it has been decided to update the NPR along with the house-listing phase of Census 2021 during April to September 2020 in all the states/union territories except Assam.

Most of the opposition parties see NPR as a prelude to the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC), which has been opposed by even NDA allies like the JD(U). The NPR questionnaire asked details like the birthplace of parents. In combination with the recently amended citizenship law, protesters fear that the registry might be eventually used for NRC.

As a result, people, predominantly Muslims, have hit the streets as India witnesses one of the most widespread civilian unrest of recent times.

New Delhi, Feb 3: BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde's swipe at Mahatma Gandhi has irked the top party leadership and he may be forced to apologise, party sources said on Monday.

A senior BJP leader said the Karnataka leader's comments were "condemnable" and the party leadership is upset with him.

"The party has conveyed its displeasure to him and asked him to take remedial measure. Any insult to Mahatma Gandhi is unacceptable," he said.

Hegde, a former Union minister, reportedly claimed at an event in Bangaluru that the entire freedom movement was staged with the consent and support of the British, and the independence movement led by Gandhi was a "drama".

He also wondered why the Father of the Nation was called 'Mahatma' (a great soul).

The party leader said the Lok Sabha MP is a "disciplined" member of the party and will do what he has been asked to.

Hegde, known for hardline Hindutva leanings, has a history of making controversial remarks.

This man and some others like him have reached the peak of their madness.

They will not change their attitude, as they know that nobody can do any harm to them.

Therefore they will listen only to dire action what they deserve per the penal code. If required put him behind bars.

Dont harm them more, see their families.
