Medical colleges seek 15% hike in fees

Bengaluru, Jun 19: Private medical colleges in the state have sought a 15% hike in the annual fee.

The management representatives of private medical colleges met Minister for Medical Education D K Shivakumar on Monday with regard to the fee hike for undergraduate medical and dental courses for the academic year 2018-19.

Representatives of the Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association and Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (ComedK) have sought a 15% hike in the fee.

The government-appointed fee regulatory committee chaired by former high court judge Justice Shylendra Kumar, had proposed a hike of eight percent and had written to individual medical and dental colleges in this regard earlier this month.

However, according to an MoU signed between private medical colleges and the state government, an annual fee hike of only 10% is allowed. The MoU is valid for three successive years.

Shivakumar told reporters, “They are demanding a fee hike citing the government’s decision to hike the pay scales of employees by 30%. They are also demanding that the fee be fixed on par with the fee charged at ‘deemed to be’ medical universities. We are examining the legal implications as an agreement has been entered into for a 10% hike for three years.”

Sources said medical colleges representatives may budge for a 10% hike if the negotiation for 15% fails. Colleges, however, are unhappy over the eight percent. The Karnataka Professional Colleges Foundation said that they will approach the court citing that the fee-regulatory committee must send the proposal to the government and not fix a fee and send recommendations to colleges.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Wednesday urged Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to waive all property taxes in urban local and rural panchayats for a period of one year as citizens are bearing a huge financial brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking to Twitter, Shivakumar wrote, "Citizens are bearing a huge financial brunt of the Corona Pandemic. It's imperative on the government to ease the financial burden on citizens. I urge CM B.S. Yediyurappa to waive all property taxes, in urban local bodies and rural panchayats, for a period of one year on humanitarian grounds."
In yet another demand, Shivakumar on Tuesday said the state government should give details of the amount it spent on migrants and labourers during the coronavirus crisis if it is transparent.

"The image of Karnataka has come to a very rotten position. We all know that Karnataka has failed in sorting out the problem. Let them (the state government) tell what has been the amount spent on the labour, migrants and food kits on the health department. We want an account (of the expenditure) if they are so transparent," Shivakumar said.

He said the state government should have approached the hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients and if any private hospital refused, a message should have been given that the government would take it over.

He also accused the state government of corruption.

Tumakuru, Jan 8: RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat stoked controversy on Wednesday by stating that 'Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is full of traitors'.

He was addressing the media after taking part in a pro-CAA rally organised by National Citizens Forum near the office of the deputy commissioner of the district here.

Bhat said, “JNU is full of traitors. Congress and communist parties have been generating anti-nationals there. But there is no need to close the university down. Modi government will handle it.”

“Nationalism should be infused among the students there through love and trust. They should be made to realize what the truth is,” he said.
