Meet Rizwana Shaikh – mom by day, burqa-clad Ola driver by night

Mumbai, Dec 17: How often does it happen that you book an app cab in the wee hours and find a burqa-clad woman pulling up in her red hatchback?

"People find it tough to believe it when I call them up and ask for directions or when they see me in the driver's seat," says 30-year-old Rizwana Shaikh, a stay-at-home mum by day and Ola driver by night. Shaikh, who grew up in Lucknow, moved here after her marriage to a Jogeshwari businessman.

While it's been some years since women stormed the male bastion and started driving taxis and autos, aggregators have taken the trend several notches higher. Women, especially from conservative backgrounds, are stepping out of rigid community boundaries to become part of the city's nightlife. With GPS tracking their every move, the women are not troubled by safety concerns.

Shaikh, mother of a seven-year-old, claims in the eight months she has been on the roads at night seldom has she come across any trouble-maker. "However, when sloshed men book the cab I feel uncomfortable and don't go ahead with the ride," says Shaikh, who was a beautician earlier. With a monthly income between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000, she says, "This is a more lucrative profession."

"My husband and family have been very supportive and understand this job is necessary to meet household expenses," she says.

Mehjabeen, 42, also a Jogeshwari resident, is a night-shift veteran and zips across the city without any trepidation. While her husband is a marketing professional, she has been a driver for six years now. "I start my day at 8pm after wrapping up household duties and drive till morning," she said, adding her family has been supportive.

Ola as well as Uber refused to reveal the number of women on their rolls in the city, but both agreed the trend was on the rise.

"The number of women partners is growing by over 40% quarter on quarter in metros as well as tier-2 and -3 cities. We have women working with us across categories like cabs, autos and bikes," said an Ola spokesperson.

The advantage of working with aggregator platforms, says 25-year-old Vidya Shelke, an auto driver, is that we can choose our working hours. "I take bookings only when I can manage. Also, I do not have to park my vehicle at the stand and wait for commuters. This is way more convenient and safe," said Shelke, who lives in the western suburbs with her husband and two children. She has been on the job for the past six months.

For young women like Prajaktha Salunkhe, it is a route to financial independence. "Without any capital or financial support, it is difficult to start any venture. This comes as a boon," says the 23-year-old cabbie, who took to driving soon after graduation.

Aggregator platforms are doing their bit through skill development and training programmes. "We aim to hire more women from sections where cultural and societal pressures have been a barrier," said an Uber spokesperson.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The father of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma, whose body was pulled out of a drain in northeast Delhi's riot-hit Chand Bagh, complained to police that goons had assembled at the residence of former AAP counselor Tahir Hussain and were throwing petrol bombs from the rooftop.

According to the FIR which was registered on Thursday on the basis of the complaint lodged by Ankit's father Ravinder, the goons were also firing from the rooftop.

On Tuesday, Ankit returned from his office at 5 pm and then went outside to buy groceries. When he did not return, the family started looking for him and later filed a missing report, the FIR stated.

They got to know from their neighbours that a body has been recovered from a drain… later it was found to be that of Anikt, it said, adding the body had multiple stab injuries on the face, head, back, and chest.

The family has alleged in the FIR that it was Hussain and the goons at his residence who killed Ankit. In the FIR, Hussain has been accused of murder, destruction of evidence and abduction.

Soon after the FIR was registered on Thursday, the AAP suspended Tahir Hussain from the primary membership of the party till the police completed its probe.

The death toll in Delhi's communal violence rose to 42 on Friday as the situation showed some signs of returning to normalcy and clouds of smoke cleared to reveal the extent of the damage from the worst riots in the city in over three decades.

A total of 148 FIRs have been registered and 630 people have been either arrested or detained so far in connection with the communal violence, a Delhi Police spokesperson said.

Jaipur, Jul 14: In a show of strength, Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot-led Rajasthan Congress camp on Monday released a video showing at least 16 MLAs sitting together.

This comes hours after the Congress held a legislature party meeting. Party leaders said 106 of 122 MLAs attended, a claim contested by the Pilot camp.

The 10-second video was shared late at night on Pilot's official WhatsApp group.

In the video, at least 16 MLAs are seen sitting together in a close circle. Pilot is not seen in the video.

Six other people can be seen in the video but they could not be identified.

Some of the MLAs seen in the video are Indraraj Gurjar, Mukesh Bhakar, Harish Meena.

Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh tweeted the video with the caption "Family".

Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar tweeted, "...Loyalty in Congress means Ashok Gehlot's slavery. That is not acceptable to us."

Pilot has been upset since he was denied the Rajasthan chief minister's post after the December 2018 assembly elections.

On Sunday, he claimed to have the backing of 30 Congress MLAs and "some independents".

Those close to him disputed Gehlot's claim that his government had a majority, and said this is proven in the assembly and not at the CM's house.

Sources close to him have also ruled out the possibility of Pilot joining the BJP.

In the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, the Congress has 107 MLAs and the BJP 72. In the past, the ruling party has claimed the support of 13 independents, two MLAs each from the CPM and the Bharatiya Tribal Party, and one from the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

New Delhi, Feb 6: Unemployment rate in the country as per a new survey was 6.1 per cent in 2017-18, the government informed Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Labour Santosh Gangwar said the government is conducting a new Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) with new parameters and bigger sample size, and its results cannot be compared with previous surveys in this regard.

"As per the new Periodic Labour Force Survey being conducted by the government, the labour force participation is 36.9 per cent and the rate of unemployment for 2017-18 is 6.1 per cent," he said.

Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour, the minister said the report of this survey is very different than the surveys conducted in previous years.

This survey is not comparable to previous surveys, he said, adding it was an attempt to provide authentic data with the new survey conducted through the Ministry of Statistics.

"We are focusing on infrastructure development and ease of doing business and India's position in the world has improved. India has improved its position to 63rd rank now in 2019 against 196 in previous years," he said.

"Our government is very conscious of creating employment opportunities and is running such programme which generates employment.

"The way our government is functioning, employment opportunities are being created and the youths are getting jobs also," the minister said.

Gangwar said the government has stopped the previous survey as the sample size was low and an attempt is being made to improve the data by adding various parameters and provide more authentic data.

The minister said it will take time for collection of data as households have to be visited on the ground for authentic data collection in rural areas also.
