One of the country's worst aviation disasters, Air India Express flight 812 coming here from Dubai overshot the runway and crashed while landing at the international airport in the early hours of May 22, 2010 killing 158 passengers. There were 160 passengers and six crew members on board this ill-fated flight. Eight of them survived.

On Sunday the memorial function was held by the Dakshina Kannada district administration at the memorial park at Kurlur where the bodies of 12 unidentified victims of the crash have been buried. The park is being developed as a tribute to the victims of the incident. New Mangalore Port Trust is developing the park. District Minister in-charge B Ramanath Rai led the memorial service and offered floral tributes.

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has been holding a condolence meet every year to mark the anniversary of this crash. Until last year the memorial services were held at the crash spot. However, at the condolence meeting last year it was decided to hold the annual memorial service at the memorial park from this year.

22/5 Park

Speaking to media persons Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim said that although the district administration had urged the Airports Authority of India and Air India to set up a memorial at the park, they have not been forthcoming on this issue. The administration has requested Mangaluru City Corporation to set up the memorial, he said adding the civic body is expected to take a decision on this request shortly. An early memorial set up at the crash site at Kenjar was vandalized.

The park at Kuloor has been named '22/5 Park' to remember the month and date of the incident, the DC said, adding the administration has placed on record its gratitude to New Mangalore Port Trust authorities for its total support in constructing the park. "The work on the park will be completed in the next three months," Ibrahim said. The dozen bodies were interned at the park site after all attempts to identify them through string of tests proved inconclusive.

Bengaluru, Jun 22: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru Police has obtained the custody of an associate of gangster Ravi Pujari and is questioning him about his role in several cases against the gangster, the police said on Monday.

According to the police, Khan is convicted in the case related to the murder of a builder named Subba Rao in the year 2017. The accused has been identified as Yousuf Bacha Khan.

"Continuing the investigation of Ravi Poojary, CCB had obtained custody of Yousuf Bacha Khan, who is associate of Pujari. Khan was convicted in the Subba Rao murder case. He is being questioned about his role in other cases," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil said.

The CCB had recently filed two charge sheets against gangster Ravi Pujari in Shabnam developers double murder case and an extortion case.

Pujari, who was wanted in several cases including ones related to heinous crimes like murder and extortion, was extradited to Bengaluru earlier this year from Senegal.

The gangster, who parted ways with underworld don Chhota Rajan, had jumped bail after he was arrested in Senegal in 2019 and had escaped to South Africa, where he was involved in drug trafficking and extortion.

According to sources in the Indian intelligence, Ravi Pujari was hiding under the false identity of Anthony Fernandes, a Burkina Faso passport holder, in a remote village in South Africa.

Bengaluru, Jul 13: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated the process of recruiting 1,700 medical professionals, doctors, staff nurses and support staff to scale up its workforce to set up 30,000 COVID-19 care beds, an official said on Sunday.

According to the official, to establish and run 30,000 COVID care beds, 1,800 doctors and 3,600 nurses are required. A 10,100-bed facility was set up last week in the Bengaluru International Exhibition centre (BIEC) on Tumkur road.

The Health Department has calculated that one doctor per shift is needed for every 100 patients and one staff nurse for every 50 patients. Similarly, two supporting staff and three Group D employees are needed per shift for every 100 patients. Generally, a day is divided into three shifts of eight hours each.

"The department plans to actively utilise the services of interns and postgraduate students for the COVID Care Centre (CCC) operations," said the official.

Currently, there are 2,100 CCC beds operational under the civic body in Bengaluru with a pool of 503 doctors, 167 ayush doctors, 128 nursing and paramedical staff.
