Mid-term polls imminent in Karnataka; it depends on Cong leaders: Deve Gowda

Bengaluru, Jun 21: In a fresh development, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Friday said mid-term polls for the State Assembly are imminent and that he is not sure how long the Congress-JD(S) coalition government would last. 

"I am not sure how long the coalition government would last. Going by the developments in the past two months, mid-term polls seem imminent. People can understand everything... Let me see how things pan out," he told a Kannada news channel. 

Gowda had on Thursday said that the JD(S)-Congress coalition government was formed due to Congress' pressure and that he was personally not in favour of it.

His comments had come in the wake of reports that coordination committee chairman Siddaramaiah had recommended to the party high command to sever ties with the JD(S). Siddaramaiah had told the Congress leadership that the party's image was getting damaged due to its alliance with the JD(S). 

Gowda further said that the ball is now in the Congress' court and that the fate of the coalition hinges on the grand old party. "It (longevity of the government) depends on the Congress leaders. Let them decide what they want. In fact, it was the Congress leadership which wanted the coalition government," he stated. 

He said the Congress wanted to join hands with the JD(S) with an aim to stop BJP's B S Yeddyurappa from becoming the CM. Besides, the JD(S) has given away the Cabinet berth from its quota to the Congress in the interest of the coalition. Still, the Congress leaders were unhappy. 

Reacting to Gowda's comments, Congress MLA Munirathna said if the JD(S) was not happy with the Congress, let it end the alliance and go to polls.

Udupi, Jun 4: Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakhar on Wednesday said that he will take up an issue before a high-powered committee on COVID-19 to find out the possibility of imposing lockdown on a particular house of the person infected with the virus instead of sealing down of entire areas.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday after reviewing the district's prevailing COVID situation, the minister said the concept and modalities of declaring any area as containment zone has undergone changes in the last two months.

"Hitherto, we were declaring the entire area as the containment zone after detection of coronavirus positive cases. Subsequently, the area of the containment zone was decreased from the whole area to a particular street," the Minister said.

"Now, BJP MLA Raghupati Bhat has given a suggestion to seal down a particular house of the positive patient which would be taken up before the high-powered panel. The district administration concerned could supply all essential items to the particular family," he said.

He further said that the Union government has been providing all facilities to all the states to deal with the situation."

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The Karnataka government has announced the purchase of an additional two lakh rapid test kits for COVID-19 detection at a task force meeting on Thursday.

Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other senior officials were present at the task force meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan.

The Chinese government has agreed to supply rapid test kits to an officially listed company, which will increase the number of tests once it arrives, Ashwathnarayan said.

Moreover, 250 kiosks will be set up in the state to collect saliva samples of a person with COVID-19 symptoms. Such kiosks will be launched one-by-one in taluks of the state.

Ashwathnarayan explained that this would increase the sample collection process and prevent the spread of disease.

Ashwathnarayan said the purchase of the required 25,000 RT-PCR kits was also approved.
He stated that COVID-19 patients should be treated at government-appointed hospitals. A separate coronavirus helpline will be made operational to address the queries of people, Ashwathnarayan said.

During Ramadan, it has been decided not to allow mass prayers, he said. And added that tracing of cases related to the Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi has been completed in the state.

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Congress is confused on the Ram Mandir issue and in dilemma to take a firm stand fearing loss of Muslim or Hindu votes, according to BJP leader and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

"Congress opposed BJP's stand on constructing Ram Mandir in Ayodya, it called Lord Ram fictional and even decided to break the Ramsetu. Now, Congressmen are speaking the other way. Congress cannot think beyond vote bank politics which is in its DNA itself. Congressmen think that they are born to be in power," he said while speaking to media persons. 

He said that BJP is all for constructing a grand Ram Mandir peacefully and legally, due to its conviction and not for politics. Same was the case with the revocation of Article 370 for Jammu & Kashmir. Anti-national activities have comparatively come down now. 

Some people do not want everything going smoothly in the country, and Congress and Asaduddin Owaisi are among them, Joshi opined, adding that the Congress is merely frustrated.
