Abu Dhabi father appeals for help to find missing son

ThahseerDubai, April 10: An Indian father has appealed for help to find his son who went missing along with his car on March 25.

Abdul Khader, a businessman from Abu Dhabi, says his son Mohammed Thahseer Berkka, 28, has been missing for more than two weeks.

"He is missing with his vehicle and his two mobile phones are switched off. I am worried that he might have been kidnapped," said Mr Khader, who hails from Kerala.

He said his son, who owns two mobile phone shops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has been working in the UAE for seven years.

"I am yet to receive information on his whereabouts or the whereabouts of the vehicle he used for travelling. He was driving a Hyundai that he rented from a company," he said.

Mr Khader has filed a missing persons report at Musaffah Police Station and also at the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi.

The family said they have also checked at hospitals. "He usually carries money in his car while driving because of his business. We fear he may have been kidnapped," said his uncle Abu Mohammed.

"He went to visit one his relatives in Al Ghusais," said Mr Mohammed. "They asked him to stay for food but he got a call and went downstairs for some purpose. After some time, his phone was switched off and he went missing.

"We have no clue what happened to him. He recently set up a mobile phone shop in a partnership in Dubai and was doing well."

He said Mohammed did not have GPS in his car, so they were unable to locate the vehicle. "It looks like a mystery. We are worried about his safety," said the uncle.

The Indian embassy confirmed they received a complaint regarding the missing person and had communicated with local authorities.

"Police are following up the case. We are waiting for some information on this matter, " said Anand Bardhan, counsellor of community affairs at the embassy.

Dubai, Apr 26: The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has instructed financial institutions in the country to search and freeze all bank accounts of Indian billionaire BR Shetty and his family along with those of companies where he has a stake.

The apex bank has also blacklisted several firms associated with Shetty along with their entire senior management.

In an advisory issued last week, CBUAE cited decisions of the Federal Attorney General and asked financial institutions to search and freeze any bank accounts, deposits or investments in the name of Shetty or his family members.

Financial institutions have been directed to stop transfers from these accounts and deny access to deposit boxes.

Currently in India and facing a string of charges, Shetty is the founder of NMC Health.

The heathcare provider was placed into administration by a UK court recently following an application by the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) which alone has an exposure of $981 million (Dh3.6 billion).

Overall, UAE banks have a combined exposure of more than Dh8bn to NMC which owes money to Oman-based banks and financial institutions as well.

Probing credit facilities
The Central Bank has sought information about credit facilites extended to the Shettys along with details of their safe deposit boxes and the financial transfers they have made till date.

A similar advisory has been issued for NMC Healthcare and NMC Holding, based on the decision of the Head of Plenary Fund Prosecution.

The Central Bank has also blacklisted several companies associated with Shetty. Key staff members of these firms have been similarly blacklisted.

Dubai, May 27: As the authorities have taken steps to ease the Covid-19 restrictions to allow the people of Dubai to resume sporting activities from Wednesday, May 27, the Dubai Sports Council has answered your key questions.

Q&A

What are the age groups allowed to practice sports during this period?

From 12 years old to 60 years old.

Is it required to do the Coronavirus (Covid 19) medical test certificate before resuming physical activity?

Returning to the activity does not require a Coronavirus (Covid 19) test certificate.

Is it allowed for the elderly with chronic diseases to return to sports activities in fitness and yoga centers?

No, it is not allowed.

Is it allowed to use the shower cabins and bathrooms in fitness and yoga centers?

Shower cabins, saunas and jacuzzis are not allowed, while bathrooms are allowed, with sterilisation being emphasised after each use.

What sports can resume its activities?

Beirut, Aug 7: A devastating explosion that destroyed much of Beirut might have been the result of a missile attack or bomb, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said, as the death toll from the blast rose to 154.

More than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate had been sitting in a port warehouse for six years, but there have been conflicting accounts about why Lebanese authorities decided to empty the shipment of explosive material. The vessel carrying the flammable cargo was heading from Georgia to Mozambique when it stopped in the Lebanese port to load up on iron, according to the ship’s captain.

By Friday, 19 suspects had been arrested and Lebanon’s former director general of customs Chafic Merhy had been questioned by military police.
