Khalifa asks new envoys to elevate UAE’s stature

Abu Dhabi, April 11: The UAE’s new permanent representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato), Mohammed Ali Al Naqbi, ambassador to Libya Obaid Mohammed Al Ka’abi and ambassador to Kuwait Ali Ahmed bin Shukr Al Za’abi were sworn in before the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in presence of Shaikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President’s Representative, and General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.


Shaikh Khalifa also received the credentials of 12 new ambassadors to the UAE at Al Diyafa Palace in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.


During the swearing-in ceremony, Shaikh Khalifa gave directives to the new ambassadors to further elevate the UAE’s international stature at various levels. He also underscored the role of the UAE’s diplomatic missions in helping nationals abroad and attending to their affairs, noting that the UAE considers human beings as its top priority and harnesses its resources to serve the nation and nationals.


For their part, the new ambassadors pledged to dedicate themselves to sincerely working for bolstering cooperation and friendship with other countries in order to reflect the prestigious stature of the UAE and its wise policy under the leadership of Shaikh Khalifa.


While receiving the new foreign envoys, the President reiterated the UAE’s interest in extending bridges of friendship, cooperation and tolerance among people of the world, building balanced relations with all friendly countries as well as in promoting its economic, cultural and tourism relations with other countries. The new resident ambassadors include Jose de Mendonca e Lima of Brazil, Orazumyrat Gurbannazarov of Turkmenistan, Gegham Gharibjanian of Armenia and Dhananjay Jha of Nepal. The eight non-resident ambassadors are of Cuba, Mongolia, Slovenia, San Marino, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone. The President welcomed the new ambassadors and expressed his best wishes of success in their efforts to promote and expand relations with the UAE. “The UAE will provide full support to you in your second home through the relevant authorities in order to facilitate your missions and enhance relations between the UAE and your countries,” Shaikh Khalifa said.


He asked the ambassadors to convey greetings and best wishes to their heads of states.


Also in attendance at the ceremony were Shaikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region; Shaikh Surour bin Mohammed Al Nahyan; Shaikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor; Shaikh Saeed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative; Shaikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation; Lt. General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs; Shaikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court; Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Shaikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works; Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; other Shaikhs and senior officials.

Mar 28: Just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Abu Dhabi crown prince on the Coronavirus Pandemic, India “thanked the UAE authorities for accommodating the 19 Indian nationals who were stuck at Dubai airport for past several days”.

The Indian mission in Dubai tweeted, “They got stranded due to various restrictions to deal with Covid-19 pandemic. Hotel rooms have been given to them inside the airport. Our Consulate had been in constant touch with the Indian nationals and UAE and Indian authorities. We had also provided some financial help to enable our stranded passengers to buy food. The situation was tough due to the pandemic situation.”

During their conversation last evening, Abu Dhabi crown prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan had “assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the welfare of the over two million Indians living in UAE and contributing to its economy”. PM Modi “thanked the Crown Prince for his personal attention to the health and safety of Indian expatriates in the present situation”.    

A statement issued late on Thursday night by the MEA said, “The two leaders exchanged information and views on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in their respective countries, as well as the steps being taken by their Governments. They agreed that the next few weeks would be crucial to control the spread of the virus, and required concerted and coordinated efforts by all countries. In this context, they appreciated the organisation of a Virtual Summit among G20 Leaders earlier in the day, to discuss the pandemic.

Both leaders emphasised the importance they attach to the strength and richness of the bilateral relationship. They agreed to maintain regular consultations between their officials in the present situation, particularly to ensure continuity of logistical supply lines.”

Beirut, Aug 4: A massive explosion has shaken the Lebanese capital of Beirut, with a very high number of casualties expected.

A warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a huge explosion, Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Several smaller explosions were heard before the bigger one occurred.

Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s General Security, said that “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the bigger explosion, with a colossal shock wave seen traveling fast across several hundreds of meters and shrouding the area in thick smoke.

The blast left enormous material damage to the surrounding buildings and structures. But it was not immediately known how big an area was affected.

There was also no immediate casualty count. Graphic amateur video from the scene showed bodies strewn on the ground, with their clothes blown off.

The NNA said rescue operations were underway. Ambulances were seen heading toward the scene in central Beirut.

Lebanese LBC television channel quoted Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan as saying that the blast had caused a “very high number of injuries” and “extensive damage.”

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said an unspecified number of firefighters dispatched to extinguish the initial fire had been killed in the explosion.

“As they were putting out the fire, the explosion took place and we’ve [lost them],” he said, breaking down on live TV.

The explosion comes at a time when the Arab country is passing through its worst economic and financial crisis in decades, and amid rising tensions with Israel.

Mar 30: the UAE Cabinet approved a series of new initiatives, foremost among which was the automatic extension of residence permits expiring from March 1.

The residence visas would be extended for a renewable period of three months without any fees to ease the economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis on residents, official news agency WAM reported.

The Cabinet has also waived the administrative fines associated with infractions on the services provided by the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship, starting April 1 and lasting for a renewable period of three months.

The initiatives also entail granting a temporary license to use digital solutions for remotely notarising and completing judicial transactions.

Government services expiring from March 1 will also be extended from April 1 for a renewable period of three months. The decision applies to all federal government services, including documents, permits, licenses and commercial registers.

The UAE has introduced a slew of initiatives to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, including the online renewal of driving licences and vehicle’s registration cards.

The country’s telecom regulator, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), also issued a directive that no mobile service with expired ID documents will be disconnected or suspended in the UAE.

The UAE has reported a total of 611 Covid-19 infections and five related deaths in the country.

A national sterilisation programme is underway that will continue until Saturday April 4, concluding on the morning of Sunday, April 5.

Carried out daily from 8pm until 6am the following morning, the programme will include the disinfection of private and public facilities.
