Khalifa, Qaboos discuss latest developments in the region

Abu Dhabi, April 15: The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman held talks in Al Ain City on relations between the two countries and ways to promote them in various spheres.


The talks were held in presence of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.


They exchanged views on the latest regional developments and the march of the Gulf Cooperation Council to realise the aspirations and ambitions of peoples of member states and to serve matters of common concern.


Shaikh Khalifa hailed Sultan Qaboos’ visit to “his second home country as a source of pride and a sign of sincere brotherhood and friendship”.


He also described the visit asan effort to further promote ties and consultations and continuous coordination between the two countries in the context or predominant cooperation and coordiantion in all spheres.”


Sultan Qaboos expressed happiness over visiting the UAE and meeting President Shaikh Khalifa.


Sultan Qaboos stressed that relations between the UAE and Oman will see more progress in various spheres thanks to a common keen interest by the leaderships of the two countries.


President Shaikh Khalifa also hosted a lunch banquet in honour of Sultan Qaboos and the accompanying delegation.


Earlier, Sultan Qaboos and his delegation were received at Al Ain airport by Shaikh Khalifa, Shaikh Mohammed, Shaikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President’s Representative; Gen. Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces; Shaikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region; Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Presidential Affairs; Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Ali Al Qutbi, Omani Ambassador to the UAE, and members of the Omani embassy.

Tehran, Jan 7: Iranian state television says 35 people have been killed and 50 others injured in a stampede that erupted at a funeral procession for a general slain in a US airstrike.

The TV says the stampede erupted in Kerman, the hometown of Gen. Qassem Soleimani where the procession was underway on Tuesday.

A procession in Tehran on Monday drew over 1 million people in the Iranian capital, crowding both main thoroughfares and side streets in Tehran.

Dubai, Apr 16: Saudi Arabia reported 518 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 6380, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

According to the ministry of health, the number of recoveries today were 59, making total of recoveries in the kingdom 990, with 71 critical cases in intensive care.

The ministry also confirmed 4 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 83.

Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew and lockdown on the cities of Riyadh, Tabuk, Dammam, Dhahran and Hofuf and throughout the governorates of Jeddah, Taif, Qatif and Khobar. This week the curfew was extended until further notice by king Salman

Overall, Saudi Arabia has reported one of the lowest rates of infections in the region, with around 6000 cases in a population of over 30 million.

Private sector support

Saudi Arabia has allocated SR50 billion (Dhs49 billion)to support the private sector as part of its package of initiatives approved by King Salman on Wednesday aimed at mitigating economic repercussions from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The package targets small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and economic activities that have been most affected by the pandemic.

Dubai, Jan 8: Iranian state television said on Wednesday that at least 80 "American terrorists" were killed in attacks involving 15 missiles Tehran launched on US targets in Iraq, adding that none of the missiles were intercepted.

State TV, citing a senior Revolutionary Guards source, also said Iran had 100 other targets in the region in its sights if Washington took any retaliatory measures. It also said US helicopters and military equipment were "severely damaged".

Iran launched missile attacks on US-led forces in Iraq in the early hours of Wednesday in retaliation for the US drone strike on an Iranian commander whose killing has raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East.
