Dubai, Jan 4: An Indian man, who worked illegally for six years in the UAE, died of heart attack when he went for applying for amnesty to return home.

Chakali Pentaiah died on December 16, according to his death certificate issued by the Ministry of Health. However, his family got to know about his death through a report that appeared in a Telugu newspaper in India on Thursday, 18 days after the incident took place, his brother-in-law Dubbaka Mallesham has said.

According to Mallesham, 46-year-old Pentaiah, a washer man, had last spoken to him while he was at the Investigation and Follow Up on Illegals Department in Al Aweer to apply for amnesty.

“He came here on a visit visa. But he did not get an employment visa. He pushed through six years by working illegally for many laundries here. He badly wanted to go home during the amnesty,” Mallesham said. Since Pentaiah had his original passport with him, Mallesham said, he was advised by the Indian consulate in Dubai to proceed to Al Aweer for applying directly for an outpass. “I only had sent him off in a taxi. He had talked to me a couple of times while he was in the long queue there. He told me about having tea and biscuits so that he can take the pill.” He said Pentaiah was suffering from chest pain and was on medication after visiting a hospital a week earlier. “When his mobile got switched off I initially thought the battery might have drained. But he did not get back later. I went to the Al Aweer department enquiring about him three days consecutively. But nobody knew about him and I thought he might have been arrested before getting deported. It was only when his son called me today after seeing the report about his death in the Andhra newspaper that I got to know about it.”

He said he approached Bur Dubai police and identified Pentaiah’s body on Thursday. “I don’t know when I can take his body home. My sister is devastated and not drinking or eating anything now,” said Mallesham who is on a laundry’s visa.

M. Bheem Reddy, vice-president of Hyderabad-based NGO Migrants Rights Council, said the Indian consulate was requested to repatriate the dead body as early as possible.

Apr 9: The UAE Cabinet, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, adopted a resolution to grant paid leave to select categories of employees at the federal government.

This move is part of a series of precautionary measures and procedures taken by the UAE government to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control.

The resolution stipulates that married employees of the federal government may take fully paid leave to take care of their children below the age of 16. The age condition shall not apply to people of determination, as well as in cases where a spouse is subject to self-isolation or quarantine that requires no contact with family members, upon a decision from the Ministry of Health and Prevention.

The resolution also applies to employees whose spouses work in vital health-related occupations, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and other medical jobs that require exposure to infected people, as well as employees of quarantine centres, throughout the emergency period witnessed by the country.

Pursuant to the resolution, the relevant ministry or federal authority may ask employees holding essential technical occupations to work remotely instead of taking leave.

The resolution was issued in line with the UAE government's keenness to support employees and provide them with a safe and healthy working environment, as well as to protect the health and safety of government employees and their families, during the current crisis that requires greater efforts, additional working hours, and in some cases, exposure to infected people.

Dubai, Mar 23: All inbound, outbound and transit passenger flights to and from the United Arab Emirates – home to one of the world’s busiest hubs – are to be suspended for two weeks.

The UAE’s National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) and General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has announced that passenger flights to, from and through the country will be suspended from 25 March for a period of two weeks, in order to “curb the spread of the Covid-19”.

Freight and emergency evacuation flights will still be permitted to operate.

The suspension affects major global hubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Dubai-based Emirates has already announced that it will suspend most of its passenger flights from 25 March.

“Additional examination and isolation arrangements will be taken later should flights resume, in order to ensure the safety of passengers, air crews and airport personnel and their protection from infection risks,” state the NCEMA and the GCAA.

Dubai International Airport was the third-busiest airport in the world in 2018, handling 89 million passengers.

Riyadh, Jul 22: Saudi King Salman held a cabinet meeting via video call from hospital in the capital Riyadh on Tuesday, a day after the 84-year-old monarch was admitted with inflammation of the gall bladder.

Three Saudi sources said the king was in stable condition.

A video of the king chairing the meeting was broadcast on Saudi state TV on Tuesday evening. In the video, which has no sound, King Salman can be seen behind a desk, wordlessly reading and leafing through documents.

The king, who has ruled the world’s largest oil exporter and close US ally since 2015, was undergoing medical checks, state media on Monday cited a Royal Court statement as saying.

Three well-connnected Saudi sources who declined to be identified, two of whom were speaking late on Monday and one on Tuesday, said the king was “fine”.

An official in the region, who requested anonymity, said he spoke to one of King Salman’s sons on Monday who seemed “calm” and that there was no sense of panic about the monarch’s health.
