KSA’s banking system ‘safest in Arab world’

KSA_BankingJeddah, Jun 20: Saudi banking experts here say that the Kingdom has the safest banking system in the Arab world. This comes in response to CNBC Arabia reporting earlier this week that the Kingdom recorded 5,000 fraud cases out of 1.3 million ATM cash withdrawals recently.

The experts say that the security of the Saudi banking system and its top ranking in the Arab world has been confirmed by the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), the International Monetary Fund and World Bank’s assessment of a country’s financial system.

The banking experts also expressed concerns about a proposal to launch a single Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) banking system because of the alleged poor security standards of many banks in other GCC countries.

Talat Hafiz, secretary general of the media and banking awareness committee of Saudi banks, confirmed that Saudi Arabia ranked number one in the region, particularly for its ability to fight money laundering. “Saudi Arabia’s banking system is considered the safest in the Arab world.” He said that Saudi banks still insist on customers updating their information in person rather than on the phone or online. “Saudi banks are applying the most well known international system to protect information and their databases,” he said.

“Despite the huge annual transactions in Saudi Arabia, there are very few complaints in terms of credit cards, visa cards, online payments, or ATM cash withdrawals.”

According to Hafiz, there have been less than 2,000 cases of fraud involving ATMs, despite the many machines across the country. He said most fraud cases have involved women involved in online shopping.

“We often advise women customers, who are involved in online shopping, to make sure they are doing transactions with genuine operators. We’ve noticed that most fraud cases have come from online shopping,” he said.

Hafiz said most Saudi banks offer integrated services including Internet banking, ATM and telephone-based services.

“Since more clients want to transact electronically, customers in Saudi Arabia are now moving into electronic banking, but the move is gradual. A lot of customers, especially elderly people, need to be aware of the electronic process.”

He said, however, that more awareness campaigns are needed to educate people about safe banking behavior.

Fadhul Albuainain, a banker and economics writer, said that money laundering and fraud cases would increase if the Kingdom joins other GCC banks in a single system.

He claimed that banking security in other countries such as Qatar and Kuwait is not strict, which has resulted in problems in those countries.

“Since we have a large number of expats, many ATMs and a huge number of transactions, it is dangerous to integrate with other banking systems in the GCC or other Arab countries,” he said.

“We have succeeded in fighting money laundering and financial fraud cases, unlike in the GCC and Arab countries.”

Riyadh, Apr 30: Saudi Arabia on Thursday recorded 1,351 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 22,753, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The ministry also announced 5 more deaths and 210 new recoveries, raising the total number of fatalities and recoveries to 162 and 3,163 respectively.

Riyadh with 440 cases topped the list, followed by 392 cases in Makkah, 120 in Jeddah and 119 in Madinah.

Riyadh, Apr 28: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Saudi Arabia crossed the critical 20,000-mark on Tuesday with the discovery of 1,266 new cases. Eight new deaths were also recorded during the last 24 hours, bringing the virus-related death toll to 152.

Twenty-three percent of the new cases are of Saudi nationals, while 77 percent are of non-Saudi residents, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted the ministry spokesman Dr. Muhammad Al-Abdel Ali as saying.

Out of the total 20,077 cases till Tuesday, 17,141 cases are active, he added. A total of 118 cases are currently critical, the spokesman said.

Out of the 1,266 new cases, 327 were reported in Makkah, 273 in Madinah, 262 in Jeddah, and 171 in Riyadh. There were 58 cases in Jubail, 35 in Dammam, 32 in Taif, 29 in Tabuk and 18 in Al-Zulfi. Additionally, nine cases were recorded in Khulais; eight in Buraidah; seven in Al-Khobar; five in Hufof; four each in Qatif and Ras Tanura; three in Adhum; two each in Al-Jafr, Al-Majaridah, Yanbu, Bisha and Diriyah; and one each in Abha, Khamis Mushayt, Baqeeq, Dhahran, Dhalum, Sabiya, Hafr Al Batin, Hail, Sakaka, Wadi Al-Dawasir and Sajr, the spokesman said.

The Kingdom saw a spike in cases when the health ministry began its field-testing efforts nearly two weeks ago, targeting suspected infection cluster areas. Since then, there has been a steady increase in daily cases.

Till Monday, around 1 million people were screened in various neighborhoods throughout the Kingdom.

Dubai: There aren’t that many job vacancies right now – but be prepared for a 15-20 per cent cut in salary expectations even for those positions that are still open. Businesses in the UAE are definitely not in a generous mood when it comes to hiring, with salary cuts now part of the new normal.

And they are definitely not willing to take on new hires without extracting some cost benefit from them. “We have seen major [salary] cuts across the board in hospitality, real estate, professional services and in retail,” said Vijay Gandhi, regional head at Korn Ferry Digital, the recruitment consultancy.

“And once the headcount correction is complete in [the local] financial services and energy sector, we may see more cuts in rewards and benefits in these categories as well.”

The salary cuts are slowly extending their way into the healthcare sector as well – just about every non-COVID-19 facing medical category is coming across cuts in the number of working hours and, by extension, their take home packages.

By end of June, more businesses and sectors in the UAE will have a better understanding of their short-term revenue prospects. By then, they will also have a better reading on what their staff strength should be – and whether there should be more trimming of the workforce. Or whether they should consider a few hires as well.

A long summer
So, realistically, it could be September before such decisions need to be taken. The coming weeks will then prove to be laden with anxiety for those who are expecting to land a job option after being laid off at their current employers.

There are multiple instances of recruitment decisions having been made in February/March, and then the companies rescinding those offers to the chosen candidates citing the business uncertainty.

“The decision to hire is taking longer – so job creation is now 4-6 weeks from interview and selection compared to 4-6 days in the past,” said Gandhi.

The lucky ones
Recently, free zones and other entities had made it easier for personnel on the visa of one entity being able to smoothly transfer to another if they are likely to be made redundant. “We are seeing more flexibility being offered by the authorities given the circumstances, and the visa transfer process is happening,” said Gandhi.

“But in the vast majority of cases, businesses are going to wait and watch before normal hiring activity starts. Organizations will look to hire from September.”

A few hires are still happening
Even in the business turmoil set off by COVID-19, a few categories are still offering jobs. At the entry level, logistics services personnel and drivers with experience remain in demand.

Not just “routine jobs, there have been confirmations in more technical roles such as procurement and operations in healthcare and e-commerce,” said Gandhi. “Employers should keep an eye for good talent and have the talent acquisition team actively looking for good profiles.

“As such, organizations are not only looking at “right sizing” in numbers but also “future proofing” on what kind of skilled talent will help them in the post-COVID-19 world.”

But for the candidates, the present will be about waiting around for the call to come.
