Makkah: 8,000 workers hired to serve pilgrims during Ramadan

Makkah, Jul 1: The General Presidency for the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah has started implementing a plan prepared for the blessed month of Ramadan by recruiting more than 8,000 workers to serve Umrah performers and worshippers at the Grand Holy Mosque in Makkah.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Nasser Al-Khuzayyim, Vice President for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, pointed out that the presidency was carrying out a comprehensive plan to receive the growing number of Umrah performers and other worshippers round the clock during the holy month conforming to the directives of the wise leadership of the country to provide the best services to the guests of God.

Sheikh Al-Khuzayyim commended Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for ordering the massive expansion projects at the Grand Mosque and the holy sites, which included a project to increase the capacity of the mataf (the circumambulation area) from 48,000 pilgrims a hour to 105,000 pilgrims an hour.

Meanwhile, some 300 Boy Scouts will deploy at the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah to assist weak and elderly pilgrims to reach the mosque and back to their accommodations.

This was announced by the Department of Education in Madinah province on Sunday.

The program will be carried out under the direct supervision by Nasser Abdullah Al-Abdulkarim, Director of Education in Madinah, from the first day of fasting till the end of the holy month.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, Al-Abdulkarim said the program comes under a strategy adopted by the Saudi government to cultivate voluntary spirit among young Saudis.

The strategy involves instilling values of dialogue, building bridges of communication and extending a helping hand to others, including the guests of God, he said.

Kuwait, Aug 2: Kuwait has barred entry of foreign passengers from over 30 countries including India and China.

A circular from the Director General Civil Aviation, State of Kuwait directed all airlines operating at Kuwait International Airport to adhere to the instructions in this regard.

"Based on the decision of the Health Authority in State of Kuwait, no foreign passenger coming from the down listed countries will be allowed to enter the State of Kuwait," the circular read.

These include- India, Iran, China, Brazil, Colombia, Armenia, Bangladesh, Philippines, Syria, Spain, Singapore, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Iraq, Mexico, Indonesia, Chile, Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Hong Kong, Italy, North Macedonia, Moldova, Panama, Beirut ,Serbia Montenegro, Dominican Republic and Kosovo.

The circular stated that such restriction will also include the passengers were present 14 days before the date of travel until further notice.

The ban was announced the same day Kuwait began a partial resumption of commercial flights according to Khaleej Times, which quoted authorities stating that Kuwait International Airport would run at about 30 per cent capacity from Saturday, gradually increasing in coming months.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, Kuwait has reported 67,448 cases of coronavirus while the fatalities related to the virus stand at 453.

Dubai, July 13: An explosion caused by a gas leak damaged a restaurant, and nearby shops at a residential building in Dubai on Monday morning. 

According to Brigadier Abdul Haleem Al Hashemi, Deputy Director of Al Qusais Police Station, the incident took place at 4am when the restaurant was closed.

No injuries were reported, but two nearby shops, a pharmacy, a salon and three cars were severely damaged.

"Dubai Police patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene and worked with Dubai Civil Defense to evacuate residents of the two-storey building as a precautionary measure," Brig Al Hashimi explained.

Preliminary investigations showed that the blast was caused by a gas leak, the officer said. The Crime Scene Department of the General Department of Forensics and Criminology in Dubai is studying the evidence collected from the site and will be preparing the final report on the accident.

Brig Al Hashimi urged restaurant owners to ensure that all safety and security systems at their outlets are in good condition. Regular maintenance checks should also be conducted on all pipes and gas regulators, especially during the summer season.

Dubai, May 14: As many as 242 beggars of different nationalities have been nabbed by the Dubai Police since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Among those arrested, 143 were men, 21 were women and 78 were hawkers, said the police. "An anti-begging campaign was launched, especially to find beggar hotspots, to combat the negative phenomenon," said Colonel Ali Salem Al Shamsi, director of the anti-infiltrators department at the Dubai Police.

"Strict warnings have been issued to beggars to refrain from exploiting the sentiments of people during Ramadan," he added.

Col Al Shamsi also called on the public to stop helping them with money. "The public must direct those in dire straits through proper channels in order to get support from charitable institutions."

Col Al Shamsi also urged residents to report begging activities by calling 901 or through the Dubai Police app's 'Police Eye' feature.
