Village celebrates return of HIV-free Reham

Jeddah, Sep 4: Thirteen-year-old Reham Al-Hekami, the victim of an HIV-contaminated blood transfusion at Jazan Public Hospital, returned to her hometown in the southern region on Monday after receiving intensive treatment at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh.

Mazhara village celebrated her arrival with a large number of people, including friends and relatives, present at King Abdullah Airport in Jazan to receive her. Blood tests at reputable international laboratories have proven that she is now HIV-free, hospital sources said.

“We are extremely happy that Reham has returned to her family and friends in good health,” said Abdullah Al-Suwaid, deputy governor of Jazan, who was present at the airport to receive her.

He said Jazan Gov. Prince Mohammed bin Nasser has ordered that Reham’s family be given a house. “The governor has followed the case of Reham from the beginning,” he said.

Speaking to reporters on her arrival in Jazan, Reham said she was happy to have recovered so quickly and was looking forward to seeing her school friends. She thanked all those who prayed for her good health.

“Reham is now in good health and is in high spirits,” said her uncle Ali Al-Hekami. He thanked the government and King Faisal Hospital for the good care extended to his niece.

Reham became popular after national and international media highlighted her case.

The Ministry of Health had fired a number of officials at Jazan Public Hospital, including the hospital’s director general, medical director and laboratory and blood bank manager. The latter was also fined SR10,000.

The ministry had described the incident as a “huge mistake” and apologized to “the girl, her parents, family and Saudi society” for the pain inflicted on the girl.

People across the Kingdom expressed their happiness at the safe return of Reham from hospital. “Thank God for your safety. Mazhara village welcomes you and may God protect you from all evil,” said Abdullah Ibrahim Jahfali.

While congratulating Reham and her family, Ahmed Shehry, a Saudi, urged the government to take strict measures to end medical errors and urged hospitals and doctors to do their best to save lives. “Enough is enough for medical errors in the Kingdom,” he said.

Dubai, Apr 12: Saudi Arabia reported 429 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4462, the Ministry of Health announced on Sunday.

The ministry also confirmed 7 deaths bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 59.

According to the ministry of health the number of recoveries are 41 cases, making total of recoveries 761.

Ministry also said that 40,000 have been quarantined since the beginning of the epidemic, and only 7,000 remain in quarantine, including those who recently returned from abroad.

Extension of curfew

Early on Sunday, King Salman approved the extension of curfew until further notice due to current rates of coronavirus spread, the official news agency SPA announced.

Earlier last week, Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew and lockdown on the cities of Riyadh, Tabuk, Dammam, Dhahran and Hofuf and throughout the governorates of Jeddah, Taif, Qatif and Khobar.

Authorities had already sealed off the holy cities of Makkah and Medina along with Riyadh and Jeddah, barring people from entering and exiting as well as prohibiting movement between all provinces.

Total lockdown on Medina neighbourhoods

The Ministry of Interior also announced a total lockdown on five neighbourhoods in Medina on thursday until further notice. The neighborhoods include Al Sherbat; Bani Dhafar; Qurban, Al Jumuah; and parts of Al Iskan district and Bani Khudrah. No one is allowed to enter or exit these areas.

An official source from the ministry highlighted that the Ministry of Labor and Social Development will provide residents of these neighbourhoods with food baskets and will follow up on their needs while the ministry of health will provide them with necessary medications.

Saudi Arabia, which has reported the highest number of infections in the Gulf, is making every possible effort to limit the spread of the disease at home.

Sharjah, Aug 3: A 24-year-old Indian engineer has fallen to death from the sixth floor of a residential building on Eid al-Adha in the UAE's Sharjah, a media report said on Monday. 

The electrical engineer, identified with his single name Sumesh, hailed from the south Indian state of Kerala.

He lived in a building in Al Dhaid in Sharjah, from where he fell to death on Friday, the report said, adding that he was apparently talking over the phone and threw it down minutes before the incident.

Sumesh, who came to the UAE a year ago, worked as a designer in Sharjah's Muwaileh area. His roommates said that he had some "personal issues" that had been "bothering him for some time", according to the report.

"It was Eid al-Adha and our cook had made biryani for us. We were all cracking jokes and having a good time. In fact, even Cuckoo (Sumesh) was also laughing with us. He seemed happy. Nobody had anticipated this. I did sense a few times that something was troubling him and I even asked him about it, but he brushed it off," the report quoted his roommate Dileep Kumar as saying.

Shans KF, another roommate, said Sumesh was to travel to India for his annual leave but could not because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The police have launched an investigation and moved the body to the forensic lab for an autopsy.

Dubai, Apr 29: Saudi Arabia reported 1,325 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 21,402, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday (April 28).

Meanwhile, the ministry reported 169 recoveries today, with total recoveries in the kingdom at 2,953. There are 125 cases in intensive care.

The ministry also confirmed 5 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 157.
