Minor girl tortured by mother for a year after failing SSLC; rescued

Mangaluru, Oct 23: In a bizarre incident, a minor girl was allegedly abused by her own mother for over a year after the former failed SSLC examinations in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

MinorChild Helpline and District Children Protection Unit have now recued the girl and sent her to a rehabilitation centre, at Mangaluru.

Police said that the girl was subjected to physical abuse and torture by her mother after the former failed in class 10 examinations.

The victim was made to work till wee hours and beaten up mercilessly if she failed in her exams, they said.

The girl had injuries on her head, face, hands, and legs. She was taken to women's treatment section at Lady Goschen Hospital, Mangaluru, where she was counselled.

Police added that a complaint will be registered against the mother of the victim at Belthangady police station.

Bengaluru, May 9: Dubai NRI Kannadigaru president and entrepreneur Naveed Magundi in a video message thanked government of India for helping stranded Indians in Arab countries to return home. 

The video was shared by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan on Friday on Twitter. 

"Kannadigas, who are in trouble in the Arab countries and wanting to return home, have got the central government's rapid response. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gratitude video on behalf of Dubai President Kannadigas," Narayan said in the tweet.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has prepared a chart for the first phase evacuation of over 14,000 Indian nationals stranded in 13 foreign countries by 64 flights in week one of the operation.

Bengaluru, Jan 9: Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Thursday said that the Education Department would launch a helpline by March 2020 to address the complaints.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, the helpline is not only for children but also for teachers.

"Entire department including teachers and parents can make use of the opportunity”, the minister said.

“The helpline can be called for any complaint related to the Education Department. Our objective is to resolve problems within a stipulated time,” the Minister said.

Mangaluru, Jun 29: A hospital set up in 1848 in the Port City has to remain closed till July 5 as majority of the Doctors and Staff at Lady Goschen Government Hospital are quarantined after coming in contact with a COVID-19 infected person.

Hospital Medical Superintendent said that both in-patient and out-patient wings of the hospital will remain closed till July 5 as there is a need to fumigate and sanitise all the departments of the hospital. Patients for treatment under 'Ayushman Bharat – Arogya Karnataka' scheme will be sent to private medical colleges with the referral card from the hospital. The hospital will start functioning normally from July 6.

The Lady Goschen Government Hospital, earlier known as the maternity Hospital, is the oldest hospital in the district and dates back to 1848.
