Amidst nationwide outrage over the brutal gang-rape and murder of a minor girl in a Kashmiri temple, another similar incident has come to light from Gujarat's Surat after the police and doctors confirmed rape on girl who was found dead with 86 injury marks earlier this month.

On April 6, a girl’s brutalised body was discovered by a passerby lying in bushes in Surat’s Bhestan locality. Postmortem report revealed that the girl was kept confined for eight to ten days, tortured and sexually assaulted. She had 86 injury marks on her body, the report said.

“The body was recovered by the side of a highway. The girl was sexually assaulted and murdered on April 5," city's police commissioner Satish Sharma told Reuters.

He added the victim — who was 11, has not yet been identified and that police from Gujarat's neighbouring states have been asked to help trace her family.

The incident comes at a time when the nation is witnessing widespread protests against the government's alleged inaction in the rape-and-murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.

Meanwhile, authorities in Surat have launched a massive operation to ascertain the identity of the girl. A reward of Rs 20,000 has also been announced to anyone who has information on girl’s identity. Around 1,200 posters have also been circulated across the city for this purpose.

According to a report, the postmortem examination of the victim revealed that the girl had 86 injury marks on her body. It is believed that she was brutally tortured by her assailant for over eight to ten days before being murdered.
She must have been confined to some place and tortured by the assailant,” deputy commissioner of police, zone II, Vidhi Chaudhary said.

The postmortem examination revealed that the injuries were not fresh. The injury caused in her private parts was severe and had been inflicted a few days ago, police said. “It seems a stick like object had been inserted in her private parts. Like other injuries, the wound in her private parts is of a few days old. The girl was subjected to severe torture before being killed,” police said.

Police have registered a case of rape and also booked the unidentified accused under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The incident in Surat bears a stark and a tragic resemblance to the rape-and-murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl who was brutally raped and murdered in January this year in J&K’s Kathua.

According to the chargesheet filed by the J&K police, a retired revenue official, Sanji Ram, hatched a plan to dislodge the nomadic Bakarwal community from Rasana area in Kathua district. To execute his plan, Ram took Special Police Officer Deepak Khajuria (Deepu) and his juvenile nephew in confidence.

Fifty-year-old Ram, along with his 19-year-old nephew and four others, including two special police officer abducted the victim when she had approached them to inquire about her horses.

For the next four days, the girl was repeatedly raped and tortured by Ram and his accomplices.

Her body was dumped in Rassana forest in Kathua district on January 15. Two days later, the body of the girl was recovered from the jungle on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area.

Warangal, May 26: A 26-year-old man from Bihar was arrested here for murdering nine people by throwing them into a well to cover the murder of a woman, police said on Monday.

Dr Ravinder, Commissioner of Police (CP), Warangal, said that the bodies were recovered on May 21 and May 22 from the well. Investigation has revealed that the accused, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, killed all of them to cover up the murder of Rafiqa, with whom he had a relationship.

He said that Yadav got acquainted with a person named Maqsood and his sister-in-law Rafiqa. "Slowly, he came close to Rafiqa and started living together with her three children. Yadav tried to misbehave with Rafiqa's 15-year-old daughter. Rafiqa did not like this and threatened to lodge a complaint against him," Ravinder said.

"Then, Yadav planned to kill Rafiqa in order to live with her daughter. Yadav promised Rafiqa to marry. They boarded a train to West Bengal from March 7. Yadav mixed sleeping tablets in the food packet and later strangulated her, and threw her body outside the train," he said.

According to police, Yadav later came back to Warangal but Maqsood's wife Nisha started questioning him about the whereabouts of Rafiqa.

"Nisha threatened to lodge a police complaint against him. With a premeditated motive, from May 16 to May 20, he visited Maqsood's family who stayed in a gunny bag factory," he said.

Yadav purchased sleeping pills from Warangal and mixed in the food on the birthday of Maqsood's elder son on May 20, police said.

"Maqsood and his five family members were living there. Yadav mixed sleeping pills in the food and later they consumed it. Maqsood's family friend Shakeel was also there. Then, he went to the first floor of the factory where two labourers were staying. He mixed sleeping pills in their food too. He suspected that they may get up and create a problem. To cover up the murder of Rafiqa, he killed nine people," Ravinder said.

At around 12:30 am, Yadav woke up and saw that everyone is asleep, according to police.

"Then, he used the gunny bags to drag all the nine people into the well. He threw the gunny bag one by one into the well," Ravinder said.

According to the police, six teams were deployed to investigate the case.

"Yadav has been arrested now and will be taken to police custody. We will collect all evidence and ensure that he gets maximum punishment for this offence," Ravinder said.

Pulwama, May 28: A major incident of a vehicle-borne IED blast was averted by the timely input and action by Pulwama Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said.

According to sources, Pulwama Police got credible information last night about a terrorist moving with an explosive-laden car ready to blast at some location. They took out various parties of police and security forces and covered all possible routes keeping themselves and the police and security forces away from the road at safer locations.

The suspected vehicle came and a few rounds were fired towards it. A little ahead this vehicle was abandoned and the driver escaped in the darkness. On close look, the vehicle was seen to be carrying heavy explosives in a drum on the rear seat. Possibly more explosive would be fitted elsewhere in the vehicle, sources added.

The vehicle was kept under watch for the night. People in nearby houses were evacuated and the vehicle exploded in situ by the Bomb Disposal Squad as moving the vehicle would have involved serious threat, sources said.

The vehicle reportedly sports a number plate of a scooter registered somewhere in Kathua district of Jammu zone, sources added.
