Minorities panel sends notice on Dadri lynching

New Delhi, Oct 5: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq, following rumours he had stored beef in his house, is an issue “to which communal colour must not be added.”

Mr. Singh’s appeal came even as it emerged that the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has served a show cause notice on the district magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar on the incident. Dadri, the area where the incident occurred, falls within this district in Uttar Pradesh.

The notice was sent on September 30 after a request by Congressman Shehzad Poonawalla. The NCM has given the magistrate seven days to respond.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs, apart from one statement from senior minister Najma Heptullah, reiterating that the report of the State Government to the Home Ministry was awaited, maintained a studied silence.

“We must wait for the report. My work is to create confidence between communities,” she had said in Kolkata two days ago.

Her party colleague and controversial MP from Unnao, Sakshi Maharaj, termed the compensation given to the lynching victim’s family by the Uttar Pradesh government, an “appeasement.”

New Delhi, Jan 9: JNU students who tried to march towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday protesting the violence on the university campus were stopped by police and later detained.

The police also resorted to baton charge to control the mob who tried to block the traffic at Janpath. Using loudspeakers, the police also appealed to the crowd to maintain peace.

Before the students tried to proceed towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan, a delegation of JNU Students' Union and JNU Teachers' Association also met Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry officials and demanded the removal of Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar from his post.

Srinagar, Apr 4: Two militants were reportedly killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The security forces launched a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Hardmand Guri village in Kulgam, a police spokesperson said.

"This operation based on a credible police input was launched this morning. Two terrorists have been reportedly killed so far," the spokesperson said, adding that the exchange of fire was going on.

Earlier, the police tweeted on its official handle that three militants had been trapped in the cordon. "Same group of #terrorists trapped who killed 3 civilians recently," the police said.

New Delhi, Apr 18: With 957 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours and 36 deaths, India's total count of coronavirus cases has surged to 14,792, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.

The total cases are inclusive of 2,014 cured and discharged patients, one migrated and 488 deaths. At present, there are 12,289 active COVID-19 cases in the country.

Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that mortality rate due to COVID-19 in our country is around 3.3 per cent.

"An age-wise analysis will tell you that 14.4 per cent of deaths have been reported in the age group of 0-45 years. Between 45-60 years it is 10.3 percent, between 60-75 years it is 33.1 percent and for 75 years, and above it is 42.2 percent," Aggarwal said at a press conference here.
