How did you land in this case?

I hail from Melapalyam district of Tamil Nadu. I have lived in Bengaluru for the past seven years and sell tealeaves at Tannery Road area of the city. I was arrested from Chennai on 18 April, the day after the blast. I was shopping for my sister's marriage when policemen in plain clothes arrested my brother-in-law Basheer and me. We were grilled till late midnight, and then handed over to the Karnataka police. On 19 April, we were produced before the magistrate's court in Bengaluru. It was then that I realised that I was being framed in the BJP office blast case. Until then the police just kept asking me if I knew Panna Ismail, which I denied. I have never met him. It was later that I learnt that my brother-in-law's SIM card was with Ismail and I'd called on that number. That's how I was trapped in this case.

You were in Karnataka police's custody for a month. What happened in that one month?

It was the worst period of my life. I went through much mental agony. Had I stayed there for another 15 days, I would have had a mental break down. Our hands and feet were chained when we were brought to Bengaluru from Chennai. Karnataka police wanted me to accept my involvement in the blast. When I refused, they wanted me to identify Panna Ismail at least. After three days, they said because they have nothing against me they would release me in exchange for a favour. They wanted me to testify before the magistrate that Panna Ismail came in a bike and left a green polythene bag at my place. I refused immediately saying that I live in an area where around 10,000 people from Melapalyam live. If I were to accept any involvement in the case, nobody would give a house to our people and everybody would look at us with suspicion.

Tokyo, Feb 25: Japan's Chitetsu Watanabe, recognized at 112 years as the oldest man in the world, has passed away 11 days after he received the Guinness World Record certificate, his family said on Tuesday.

Watanabe died on Sunday night, Efe news reported.

He received the official certificate on February 12 at a nursing home in Joetsu in Niigata prefecture, where he resided.

Soon after being certified as the oldest man, he began to experience a lack of appetite and respiratory problems, the wife of his eldest son told public broadcaster NHK.

Born on March 5, 1907 in a family of farmers, Watanabe moved at the age of 20 to Taiwan, where he worked at a sugar refinery for 18 years before returning to Japan after the end of World War II.

A fan of calligraphy, custard and ice cream, Watanabe told the Guinness team that the key to his long life was laughter.

He was recognized as the oldest male in the world following the deaths in 2019 of German Gustav Gerneth (in October), aged 114 years, and Japan's Masazo Nonaka (in January), at the age of 113, three months older than the German.

It remains to be seen who will be recognized after the death of Watanabe, the only male on the list drawn up by the Gerontology Research Group of the 30 oldest people in the world.

Japan has among the highest life expectancy in the world and the number of centenarians in the country has crossed 71,000, according to the latest government figures.

Since 2000, the number of centenarians censored has quintupled, raising concern for the economic outlook and future workforce of the country - where the birthrate is on a downward trend.

Out of these, 88 per cent are women.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Monday alleged that BJP is trying to destabilise the Congress government in Rajasthan.

"It is the duty of the Governor to act according to the decision of the state cabinet. But he is acting like a central government puppet," he said at a protest organised here by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

He said the Congress is protesting across the country to save democracy and save the constitution.

"We are not fighting through violence. We are protesting peacefully. The Constitution has given the right to protest in a democratic system," he said.

He accused the BJP of "being disrespectful" to the Constitution.

"Governments must walk within the framework of the Constitution. The Constitution gives everyone rights and duties. BJP destabilises elected governments and buys our legislators by horse-trading by spending crores of money. The same thing happened in Karnataka as well," he alleged.

Facebook on Monday launched a new consumer marketing campaign in India titled 'More Together'. India is the first country in the Asia Pacific region where such a campaign is being rolled out.

It is also the first time that Facebook is rolling out a 'high decibel campaign of this stature in India', the company said in a statement.

The campaign would have multiple campaigns over the next few weeks in eight languages and the one will be set in the context of Holi.

Facebook in 2019 introduced a new company logo to further distinguish the company from the Facebook app.

The company recently announced the appointment of Avinash Pant as the Marketing Director for India operations, to drive the consumer marketing efforts across the family of apps.
