Missing businessman found dead in lake; cops suspect suicide

Mangaluru, May 18: A businessman, who was missing since May 15, was found dead at a lake located in a rubber plantation in a village in Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada district.

The deceased is Shashidhar Poojary, 39, owner of Southadka Wood Industries, a furniture outlet. 

Local police have registered a case of suicide after his body was recovered from a lake yesterday.

It is learnt that Poojary had taken a loan for business purpose. He probably was not in a position to repay the loan and hence decided to commit suicide, said the Belthangady police. Further investigations are on.

Udupi, Jun 1: As many as 73 people have been tested positive for coronavirus in Udupi district today.

The district has registered a total of 260 positive cases so far. Majority of the positive cases in Udupi district have inter-state travel history to Maharashtra.

Mangaluru, Jan 20: A teenage girl drowned after a boat in which she was traveling in capsized in the river Netravati at Uliya Hoige, Ullal, police said on Monday.

Meanwhile, four other girls who were also traveling on the same boat were rescued by the locals, the police added. The mishap happened on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Renita, a resident of Miyapadavu.

Bengaluru, Aug 5: A red alert has been issued in several districts in Karnataka due to heavy rainfall in the state since last two-three days, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

"Red alert has been announced in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Chickamagalur, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan, due to heavy rainfall in the region from last two-three days," CS Patil, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru said.
