Jaipur, Jun 13: A MOB led by self-styled cow vigilantes in Rajasthan assaulted officials from the Tamil Nadu government who were part of a five-truck convoy transporting 50 cows and 30 calves purchased by the state’s animal husbandry department from Jaisalmer, police said.

At least 50 persons have been booked by police for the attack that took place on Sunday night on NH 15 in Barmer district. Barmer SP Gagandeep Singla said that seven policemen, including a Station House Officer, were also transferred for “not acting in time”.

Singla described the attackers as “drunk anti-social elements”, four of whom were arrested on Monday. The mob blocked the highway, damaged the trucks, and assaulted the driver, helper and a veterinarian accompanying the convoy, said police. The mob also tried to set one truck on fire but was prevented by police.

The animals, belonging to Rajasthan’s famed Tharparkar breed, were purchased by the Tamil Nadu government for breeding under the National Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), they said.

The officials accompanying the convoy had all the relevant documents needed for the transaction, they said.

The attack comes two months after a 55-year-old dairy farmer Pehlu Khan succumbed to injuries after he was attacked by a mob near Alwar for transporting cows that he had legally purchased.

On Sunday, police said, officers who reached the spot tried to convince the crowd of over 200 persons that the cows were legally purchased for breeding, but to no avail. “The Tamil Nadu officials are in Jaisalmer. The cows have temporarily been put up in a local gaushala. We are making alternative arrangements for their transportation,” Singla told The Indian Express.

“The accused are not from any particular group or organisation. They were drunk anti-social elements. We have booked 50 people under sections 332 and 353 (voluntary hurting a public servant on duty) and relevant sections of the National Highways Act,” he said.

“Some policemen who did not react in time despite calls from the Tamil Nadu officials have been shunted to the police lines. They include Jairam, the SHO of Sadar Police Station, Sub Inspector Dhruv Prasad and Assistant Sub Inspector Majid,” said Singla.

Western Rajasthan’s Tharparkar cows are popular for their adaptability to arid regions and ability to provide more milk with a higher fat content. The Tamil Nadu government has been promoting the Tharparkar and other native breeds under its NADP initiative launched in 2012.

Jun 5: Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his wife Mahzabeen have tested positive for COVID-19, a top government source told CNN News 18. They were admitted to the Army Hospital in Karachi.

Some of Dawood's personal staff and guards have also been quarantined, the report said on Friday.

Dawood was the mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai blasts and is one of the most-wanted gangsters by India. He has allegedly been living in Pakistan but the neighbouring country has always refusing to accept it.

Earlier in the day, a senior diplomat of the American embassy in Pakistan has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a media report said.

In a statement, the embassy's spokesman said that while maintaining the privacy, the name of the citizen would not be disclosed.

The US State Department is responsible to protect its citizens, wherever they are, the spokesman added. In coordination with the Pakistani authorities, the consulate is working to enforce the coronavirus protocol in order to stem its spread. The spokesman added that isolation wards, contact tracing and quarantine facility are part of such protocols.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has 89,249 COVID-19 cases and the death toll is 1,838.

Apr 11: India has sent back 20,473 foreigners who wanted to return to their countries following the Covid-19 global pandemic, it was revealed on Friday (April 10).

"So far, we have successfully evacuated 20,473 foreign nationals as of yesterday. This is an ongoing process," said Dammu Ravi, Coordinator on Covid-19 issues at the Ministry of External Affairs, MEA.

"This involves several countries," Ravi said during the daily government briefing on Covid-19, although he could not list the countries offhand. "We are receiving excellent cooperation from governments all over the world for this process."

Many foreigners, especially tourists, were stranded in India when domestic and international flights were abruptly cancelled last month in a bid to curb transmission of the coronavirus.

The Ministry of Tourism has asked stranded foreigners to get in touch with the government through a special portal started for the purpose, through their embassies in India and other sources to facilitate their evacuation if they wished to head home.

As of Friday evening, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had confirmed 6,761 Covid-19 cases in India, of whom 515 patients have been cured.

There were 206 deaths reported from across the country.

Two states, Punjab and Orissa, have extended the ongoing lockdown until April 30.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will consult state chief ministers on Saturday to decide whether to extend the country-wide lockdown, which is due to end at midnight on April 14.
