Modi calls Kumaraswamy a clerk, CM dismisses it as a blatant lie

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Calling it a “blatant lie”, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday refuted the allegation levelled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said the KarnatakaCM worked like a clerk in the JD(S)-Congress coalition government.

“I am amused to see Modi reacting to a statement which I never made. After the farmer loan waiver scheme, this is the second time that he’s reacting to false information/statement. Such statements won’t deter our coalition government from the development agenda,’’ tweeted Kumaraswamy soon after Modi took a jibe at his government while addressing the BJP’s national executive meet in New Delhi.

Warning the nation against a possible mahagathbandhan rule post the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Modi said the proposed coalition would be an epitome of misgovernance and cited the example of Karnataka. “Only a few months into power, Kumaraswamy is already burdened by the Congress and has been reduced to a clerk,” Modi said, quoting reports in a section of media, which had claimed that Kumaraswamy got emotional while addressing the JD(S) Legislature Party meeting and said he was working like a clerk.

In Hubballi, coordination committee chairman and former CM Siddaramaiah said Modi is trying to create differences between the Congress and JD(S). “Whatever Kumaraswamy may have said, it was an internal matter of both the ruling parties. It is none of his (Modi’s) business. He should stop resorting to such cheap tactics and focus on work,” Siddaramaiah added.

Former PM and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda responded diplomatically: “What else can you expect from Modi?”

This is the second time the PM has hurled a barb at the JD(S)-Congress government. Last month, he had attacked the two parties at a rally in Uttar Pradesh, saying they made tall promises to farmers on waiving loans but were offering them “lollipops”. Modi alleged that lakhs of farmers in Karnataka were promised loan waivers but the government gave relief to only about 800, terming the Congress-JD(S) scheme a “cruel joke on farmers”.

Kumarswamy had hit out at Modi, saying his remarks were “factually incorrect” since it was not 800 but about 60,000 farmers who have benefited. He had also said that despite making repeated requests, the Centre did not come to the rescue of farmers and the PM was “demeaning” the state government for political gain.

Box: Tirade against Siddaramaiah in 2018

Ahead of the Karnataka assembly polls in May last year, PM Modi had taken a dig at then chief minister Siddaramaiah using different slogans. “Does Karnataka need a commission sarkar or a mission sarkar,” Modi had asked, launching an attack on Siddaramaiah in his home turf Mysuru. He had also called the Siddaramaiah government a ‘10 per cent commission government’ and ‘seedha rupaiya sarkar’.

Addressing a rally in Bengaluru, the PM had criticized the law and order situation under Siddaramaiah and said: “Our government is making efforts for the ease of doing business and talking about ease of living. But when it comes to the Congress government in Karnataka, there are discussions regarding ease of doing murders.”

Political experts say Modi is targeting the Congress-JD(S) government to shape a new narrative for his 2019 campaign. “Karnataka is a critical state for Modi to retain 270+ and hence, an onslaught against the JD(S)-Congress combine becomes vital. Further, the Karnataka experiment is seen as a model of a national anti-BJP coalition. Thus, picking holes in both its legitimacy and functioning is crucial for the BJP and its leadership,’’ said Sandeep Shastri, a political analyst.

Dubai, Mar 3: Abu Dhabi-based Indian retail tycoon MA Yusuff Ali has become the first Indian to receive Saudi Arabia's premium residency, his office said in a statement on Monday.

Yusuff Ali, 64, is the chairman of the LuLu Group, who was ranked the richest expat in the UAE by the Forbes magazine last year.

The permit, informally known as Saudi Green Card, grants expatriates the right to live, work and own business and property in the Kingdom without need for a sponsor, the LULU group said in a statement.

The introduction of the Premium Residency comes as a part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 reform plan, which was announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to boost the Saudi economy, the statement said.

Yusuff Ali said "obviously a very proud and humbling moment in my life. This is a great honour not only for me but for the entire Indian expat community and I sincerely thank the HM the King Salman, HRH Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman and the government of Saudi Arabia."

"@Yusuffali_MA , an investor from India, after obtaining Premium Residency in Saudi Arabia: ''The Kingdom became an attractive investment destination due to the remarkable growth in economy," Premium Residency tweeted on Monday.

Yusuff Ali said he was sure that this new permanent residency initiative will further boost Saudi Arabia's image as one of the key investments and business hubs of the region as well as attract and retain new investors.

This initiative is targeting key investors and prominent personalities from various fields, including sports, arts & culture, who have played a defining role in the nation building process.

The Lulu Group owns and operates more than 35 hypermarkets and supermarkets in Saudi Arabia, which includes ARAMCO Commissaries and National Guards super stores.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: Congress leader and former minister U T Khader today demanded an “objective” probe by an IAS officer into the sedition case the police have booked against a school in Bidar for a play students staged on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

On January 26, the Shaheen Primary and High School was charged by the Bidar New Town police with sedition on January 26. This was based on a complaint by an Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) worker who claimed that the play staged by the students on January 21 “insulted” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On January 30, the police arrested Nazbunnisa, the mother of an 11-year-old student and Fareeda Begum, a head-teacher in the school.

“This shows how today in India and in Karnataka, the BJP is looking to suppress the voices of people. Sedition cases have no value anymore,” UT Khader told a news conference.

“When a complaint on sedition is filed, action must be taken after obtaining legal opinion. But today, a written complaint by any BJP worker is enough to brand someone as anti-national. Even schoolchildren aren’t spared,” Khader said.

“An IAS officer should be appointed to objectively probe this. If something is found, then the police can continue the investigation,” Khader said. “But the government should pressurize the police. We’ve seen what happened in Mangaluru,” he said, referring to the police shootout that killed two people during an anti-CAA protest. “I know it’s difficult for officials to resist political pressure, but a line must be drawn. All officials must come together and send the government a message, that they will not be bogged down to pressure that’s against societal interests,” he added.

Khader said he lacked faith in the BJP government. “That’s because the BJP tends to give election tickets to those who plant bombs,” Khader said, citing the example of terror-accused Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur. “Even the Aditya Rao case (Mangaluru airport bomb planter)...we don’t know what’s happening. They just want to hush it up,” Khader charged.

Thiruvanthapuram, Feb 21: Rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been accused of sexual abuse by another nun. Police sources say that there is at least one more nun who has given a statement of sexual assault against the bishop.

This nun is a witness in the rape case registered against Franco Mulakkal. She is the 14th witness in the case and in her statement, she said that the bishop made sexually-colored and lewd remarks to her over the phone.

As per the nun, they were in communication via phone calls, chat and video calls for a period of two years from 2015 to 2017.

In the statement, the nun said that she kept quiet as she was scared of the bishop.

In her witness statement in September 2018, she said that in 2017, the bishop visited the convent she was in and hugged and kissed her.

Police say that the witness was not ready to file a complaint against the bishop. They had alerted the police in the jurisdiction and when the team met her, she refused to file a complaint. Hence a separate case wasn't registered against Bishop Franco

The first nun of Missionaries of Jesus had accused Franco of raping her multiple times at the Kuruvilangadu convent in Kottayam. The FIR in the case was registered in June 2018.

Then after protests, Franco was arrested on September 21, 2018.

The chargesheet in the case was submitted in April 2019. In the chargesheet, Bishop Franco Mullackal has been charged under various sections of the IPC: 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (2k) (rape on a woman incapable of giving consent), 376 (2n) (causing grievous bodily harm during rape), 376 (c) (a) 377 (unnatural offence) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation).
