'Modi hasn't endorsed Bhagwat's Hindu Nation comment'

Panaji, Aug 18: Goa's BJP legislator Michael Lobo Monday dismissed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's assertion of India being a 'Hindu Nation', and claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not endorsed such comments.Narendra Modi

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the legislative assembly session, Lobo, who represents Calangute constituency, said: "I don't think the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, has consented to that."

"Hindustan is a Hindu nation...Hindutva is the identity of our nation and it (Hinduism) can incorporate others (religions) in itself... The cultural identity of all Indians is Hindutva and the present inhabitants of the country are descendants of this great culture," the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief said in an interview to a magazine in Orissa last week.

Lobo, a Christian, dismissed Bhagwat's comment as a "personal opinion".

"The statement was made in his personal capacity," Lobo said. He is one of the six Christian MLAs of the BJP, accounting for more than a quarter of the ruling party's strength in the legislative assembly.

Two weeks ago a similar controversy erupted in Goa after state Cooperatives Minister Deepak Dhavalikar told the legislative assembly that India could become a Hindu nation under Prime Minister Modi.

A day later Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza said that India was already a 'Hindu Nation'.

New Delhi, Jan 5: A masked mob on Sunday entered the Sabarmati Hostel on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus and assaulted several students and professors with sticks and rods.

"I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I am bleeding. I was brutally beaten up," JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh told reporters.

She has been admitted to the AIIMS here for treatment.

Several other students were also injured in the incident.

In a video of the incident, a group of goons with their faces covered can be seen assaulting students with wooden sticks and rods.

A tweet from the official handle of the JNUSU said, "Sabarmati Hostel: right now. They are beating the students who are inside. Knocking on doors with rods. People are jumping from balconies. #SOSJNU #EmergencyinJNU."

"Professors who were trying to protect us have been beaten up. These are unknown ABVP goons, not all are students, they have covered their faces, and they are moving towards the hotels near the West Gate. Stay alert. Make human chains. Protect each other. #SOSJNU #EmergencyinJNU," another tweet added.

Meanwhile, the ABVP's JNU unit claimed in a tweet: "Emergency in JNU. Leftist goons of JNU accompained with their cadre from other universities have crossed every limit. They have proceeded with unimaginable violence on ABVP activists of JNU."

New Delhi, Apr 13: India's tally of positive COVID-19 cases rose to 9,152 following an increase of 796 cases in the last 24 hours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Monday.

Out of the total number of cases, 7,987 patients are active cases while 857 cases have been cured/discharged and migrated.

With 35 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll mounted to 308.

According to the ministry, Maharashtra remained at the top with the total cases at 1,985, including 217 patients who have recovered/discharged and 149 patients died.

Delhi's tally of positive COVID-19 cases rose to 1,154 cases, including 27 recovered and 24 patients succumbing to the virus.

Tamil Nadu too reported 1,075 cases, including 50 recovered and 11 patients dead.

Meanwhile, four states have crossed the 500 mark with regards to the total number of cases as Rajasthan recorded 804 cases, Madhya Pradesh with 532 cases, Gujarat with 516 cases and Telangana with 504 cases, as per the ministry.

New Delhi, Aug 3: Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani on Monday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the timely supply of food and medical assistance to meet the requirement in Afghanistan.

During their telephonic conversation, PM Modi also reiterated India's commitment to the people of Afghanistan in their quest for a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Afghanistan, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Monday.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the evolving security situation in the region and other areas of mutual bilateral interest.
Both leaders also exchanged greetings on Eid-Al-Adha.
