Modi hits out at Congress, terms it 'hawalabaaz'

New Delhi, Sep 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hit out at the Congress for not allowing parliament to function during the monsoon session, terming it 'hawalabaaz' (corrupt) and accusing it of creating roadblocks for the government.

hawalabaaz"Decisions were taken one after another in parliament. The 'hawalabaaz' were worried at the tough decisions by the government against black money. They could sense trouble ahead. That's why they are putting roadblocks on all major decisions," Modi said while addressing BJP workers in Bhopal before inaugurating the 10th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan.

Modi's attack on the Congress came after its president, Sonia Gandhi, on Tuesday launched a frontal attack on Modi, terming his electoral promises as nothing more than "hawabaazi"(hot air).

"We had hoped that the Congress will work with us, help parliament in enforcing (fiscal) reforms but 'ek hai jo manta nahi' (there is one who does not agree). The Congress has not been able to digest defeat (in Lok Sabha elections)," Modi said.

Assuring the people of India about fulfilling their dreams, the prime minister appealed "to those defeated and rejected by the people to please let the nation move ahead".

"Every political party must leave no stone unturned to meet public expectations if it won and also introspect in case of defeat," he added.

"We faced defeat in 1984. We introspected and tried to learn from that defeat. But we didn't criticise others and corrected our mistakes instead. Today, the nation has given us a majority (in Lok Sabha)."

"There was a time when the BJP had only two MPs in parliament. The then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi made fun of BJP in parliament and we had to listen to it," Modi recalled.

"There was a time when the Congress had more than 400 seats in parliament, but now had been reduced to 40-odd seats," he added.

New Delhi, May 24: India witnessed the biggest ever spike of 6,767 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,31,868, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As many as 147 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,867.
Out of the total number of cases, 73,560 are active and 54,440 have been cured/discharged and one migrated.

Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state with 47,190 COVID-19 cases. It is followed by Tamil Nadu (15,512), Gujarat (13,664), and Delhi (12,910).

The nationwide lockdown imposed as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19 has been extended till May 31.

Lucknow, Aug 2: Uttar Pradesh's cabinet minister for Technical Education Kamal Rani Varun succumbed to COVID-19 on Sunday at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Kamal Rani is the first minister in Uttar Pradesh to die after contracting coronavirus. She was 62.

On 18 July, the minister tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital.

She was later shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the minister's death.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Adityanath said, "Kamal Rani Varun died on Sunday at around 9.30 am. She was an experienced and capable leader. She discharged her responsibilities with competence. She was a dedicated public representative, who was always working for the welfare of deprived and oppressed sections of the society."

Kamal Rani was the MLA from Ghatampur in Kanpur. She was also twice a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Adityanath has cancelled his visit to Ayodhya scheduled for the day, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said on Sunday.

Bengaluru, May 14: ABB India has posted a profit after tax of Rs 66 crore during the first quarter (January to March) due to lower volumes including service revenue and unfavourable mix.

In Q1 CY19, it had reported a profit after tax of Rs 89 crore. ABB India follows calendar year as its fiscal year.

The company reported a profit including exceptional items and before tax of Rs 87 crore. The resultant under-absorption and mark-to-market impact due to forex volatility were partly offset by refund incomes and a one-time gain on sale of solar business during the quarter.

Revenues for the first quarter stood at Rs 1,522 crore, impacted by lower sales, non-receipt of delivery clearance, lower service revenue in the nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This impact primarily occurred in March, the company said in a statement.

ABB India said it continues to maintain a stable cash position of Rs 1,464 crore as on March 31 in a market where cash collection continues to be a challenge.

Besides, despite many activities coming to a standstill in March, the quarter was marked by commissioning for a mining major at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, electrical and automation systems for a cement major and port and electrics, drives and automation for a leading mill in Bangladesh.

Terminal installation and commissioning for LPG, power management electrical control system for a leading refinery and commissioning of two units of a power plant in Kerala are some of the other projects where ABB's involvement ensured continuity and safe operations, it said.

On a global scale, the impact of COVID-19, as well as the fall in oil prices, has significantly impacted the short-term outlook. The global economy is expected to contract in 2020 after a rapid deterioration in outlook driven by the pandemic.

Despite unprecedented stimuli by governments and central banks around the world and initial signs of recovering economic activity in China, macro-indicators point to a global recession of uncertain duration as many countries continue to face restrictions with anticipated long-term economic consequences, said ABB India.

While the company is taking prompt action to adapt its operations and cost base to safeguard profitability, it expects the results in the coming quarter to be impacted due to the loss of volumes.
