A high-powered delegation headed by D Veerendra Heggade, dharmadhikari, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala called on the duo on Wednesday. The delegation pointed to the PM and home minister about the more than 2,800-year history of Tulu that belongs to the Dravidian family of languages.

In the oral discussions with the PM and Rajnath Singh, it was pointed that using techniques of Lexico-Statistics, scholars concluded that this language developed as an independent language since 8th century BC. Highly stylized classical literature has also developed in Tulu language.

However, with all efforts, Tulu has not been included in the Eighth Schedule which currently contains list of 22 scheduled languages, out of which 18 belong to other parts of India.

The remaining four languages namely, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada belong to South India. Inclusion of Tulu language in the Eighth Schedule is a long pending demand of Tulvas, the delegation stated hoping the duo will do justice for this language. Recently, Tulu Wikipedia has been activated where more than 1500 scholarly articles uploaded. The delegation also handed over a detailed memorandum in this regard with all relevant supporting.

Though Tulu is one of the five Dravidian languages, unlike other Dravidian languages its speakers do not have a separate state. Tulu people have been living harmoniously with others over the years yet they have shown their individuality and uniqueness in culture and literature.

Tulu speakers have always left a distinct mark in whatever sphere they have been in. Janaki Brahmavara, president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy was part of the delegation.

Bidar, Feb 15: Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded the State government to withdraw the sedition case against a mother and a teacher of Shaheen school immediately.

“The police can’t execute anything without the government’s permission. The sedition case against two women should be withdrawn immediately. I will raise the matter in the Assembly to draw the government’s attention,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after meeting the woman at the prison here.

He clarified that he visited the woman not to support the school, but to extend moral support to her.

“I am an advocate and I can clearly establish based on my experience that staging a satirical play doesn’t amount for sedition. It doesn’t even defame anybody. Three cases of sedition have been registered across the state,” he charged.

He alleged that the government was following dual policy. Though the Supreme Court had concluded that the demolition of Babri Masjid was illegal, a play dealing with the demolition was staged at Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s school.
The sedition case had not been registered for staging the play.

He charged that there was an undeclared emergency in the country as the freedom of expression was being suppressed.

Chamaranagara, Mar 29: As many as 595 Tamil Nadu-based fishermen, who were working in Mangaluru, crossed the Karnataka border and reached their state via Chamarajanagar on Saturday.

Police said following the lockdown, the fishermen had left Mangaluru in more than 20 vehicles. The fishermen crossed the Karnataka border through Punajur check-post. However, the vehicles returned after dropping them near Hasanur check-post in Tamil Nadu.

As the fishermen had no proper documents, they were stopped by Tamil Nadu Police. However, the police allowed them after screening. The Tamil Nadu government arranged vehicles to ferry them, said a police officer.

New Delhi, Apr 29: WhatsApp on Tuesday said it will now allow up to eight people to connect on a group video call as an increasing number of people turn to digital platforms to connect with friends and family amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Facebook-owned company said over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic.

"...we see that people all over the world are turning to voice and video calling on WhatsApp more than ever before. Group calling has been particularly useful and our users have asked to connect with more people at once," WhatsApp said in a blogpost.

Starting Tuesday, the company is doubling the number of participants one can have on a WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time, it added.

WhatsApp emphasised that like written messages, all calls on its platform are protected with end-to-end encryption.

"We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network conditions," it added.

WhatsApp said that to access the new, higher participant limit on WhatsApp calls, all participants in a call need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on iPhone or Android.

Video calling tools like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and others have also seen a significant jump in userbase and traffic as people connect while maintaining social distancing amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Last week, Facebook had introduced Messenger Rooms that will soon hold up to 50 people with no time limit.

It had added that the company will also add ways to create rooms from Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal.

Noting that between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day, Facebook had said, adding that video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled in many countries.

Also, views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos have also increased significantly in March, it said.
