Modi returned to power by marketing ‘national security’: Ivan D’Souza

Mangaluru, May 26: The Lok Sabha election results were not a referendum on the Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition government in the State, said Ivan D’Souza, MLC and parliamentary secretary, on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons here, he said that people have voted back Prime Minister Narendra Modi to power based on national issues, not as an assessment of the State’s administration.

The Congress leader claimed that the coalition government is “pro-farmer and pro-poor” and remains intact. “H.D. Kumaraswamy will continue as Chief Minister for the next four years,” he asserted.

Mr. D’Souza said that the BJP had used Hindutva as its trump card this election and that Mr. Modi had returned to power by “marketing matters of national security”.

He alleged that Mr. Modi had not talked about “sabka saath, sabka vikas” and developmental aspects in any of the 142 rallies he addressed. Instead, he only spoke on national security matters such as Pulwama attack and the government’s retaliatory cross-border air strike. “The national media also helped him come back to power,” he said.

The MLC said that during the election tour and campaign, people spoke about the problems they faced after demonetisation and unemployment issues. But the BJP made it to power again through “religious polarisation”, Mr. D’Souza said.

However, he confessed that the Congress did not expect such a huge win for the saffron party.

Bengaluru, May 14: Three youths died of "asphyxiation" when they fell into a pit in the abandoned Kolar gold field mines, where they had gone to allegedly steal iron material early on Thursday, police said.

On Wednesday night, the trio had entered the gold mine in Kolar district, about 100 km from Bengaluru, and fell in the pit after losing balance.

After inhaling the poisonous gas in the pit, they were asphyxiated to death, they said.

"It was a seven hour exercise after which we could bring out two bodies. Work is on to retrieve the third," a police officer told .

Police reached the spot after they were alerted by the accomplices of the deceased.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi cautioned private bus transport services operators, taxis and autorickshaws from exploiting commuters in wake of bus and train services being suspended by the government as precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a statement released here on Monday, Transport Minister Savadi said it has come to the notice that private buses, taxis and autorickshaws were misusing the opportunity and exploiting commuters. Inter-district bus services have been suspended in the districts wherein lockdown has been announced to protect the health of people and none should violate the decision of the government, he stated.

Transport and Police Department officials have been asked to taken action against those violating norms and exploiting commuters. Service providers for their profit cannot risk with the health of the people and repeated cases if come to the fore, they will not be spared, Savadi cautioned.

Government has taken measures to prevent spread of COVID-19. Private transport service providers and people should join hands and cooperate to contain it, he appealed.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: The Karnataka Pre-University Board issued a five-page booklet on Coronavirus ahead of the forthcoming examination to spread awareness among the students, the Board said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Board said that the booklet contains details on symptoms of the disease, measures to be taken in case of an outbreak and other information. The Board has directed the Directors in all districts to disseminate the information to students through college principals.

The PUC examination begins from March 4 and continues till March 23.
