Modi, Saudi King, Israel PM more popular than Trump: Gallup survey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the world's third most popular leader, according to a controversial survey done by Gallup International Association, an association of polling organizations registered in Zurich, Switzerland. Topping the list of popularity is French President Emmanuel Macron followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Chinese President Xi Jinping also made it to the top 5 ranks after Modi. At 11th position, Donald Trump ranked just below Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Saudi Arabia’s king Salman bin Abdulaziz has bagged seventh position in the poll.

Modi has high favourability ratings in Afghanistan and Bangladesh, according to the survey. 69 percent of participants from Afghanistan and 51 percent from Bangladesh viewed him favourably.

Gallup's Opinion of Global Leaders Survey rated leaders according to a Net score which takes into account both favourability and unfavourability. Macron and Merkel had net scores of 21 and 20, respectively. Modi had a net score of 8.

According to a Firstpost report, Modi had ranked 5th in the 2015 survey with a net score of 4. The report also said that former US President Barack Obama topped the 2015 survey of world leaders.

The survey said there is rising favourability towards Russian President Vladmir Putin, who was at no. 6. The survey added that Trump is the only world leader where a majority hold an unfavourable opinion.

However it is Pope Francis who records the highest level of favourability – 56%, rising to 75% of those surveyed in Latin America and 66% of those living in EU-Europe. The survey was conducted across 55 countries.

Mangaluru, Jan 26: The Azizuddin Road of Mangaluru’s Bunder area, which had witnessed the brutal killing of two innocent passersby over a month ago, today witnessed the unfurling of Indian national flag by the kin of the police firing victim. 

49-year-old Abdul Jaleel Kandak, a father of two, and 23-year-old Nausheen Kudroli, were killed in an arbitrary and unwarranted police firing during a disturbance occurred due to police baton charge in the city on December 2019. 

A mixed feeling of patriotism and pain prevailed when a group of people gathered on the police firing spot to celebrate the 71st Republic Day of India. Family members of the victims were part of it.

It was Shifani, the daughter of Abdul Jaleel, who unfurled the flag and read out the preamble of the Indian constitution. 

“This is the spot where the constitution of the country was murdered,” said social activist Vidya Dinker, recalling the police firing. “The constitution is being murdered everyday in many states of India. We must regain the constitution and implement it everyday,” she added. 

Journalist Shahnaz M, DYFI leader Imtiyaz BK, SIO leader Talha, NWF leader Shahida Aslam and social activist Shabbir Ahmed were present among others.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.

Hubballi, Jan 28: Charting that the Bharatiya Janata party’s Central leaders have not given a free-hand to the Chief minister B S Yediyurappa on the issue of expansion of Cabinet, former Chief minister and the Congress leader Siddaramaiah had opined that 'it has hampered the State’s development'.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, the Congress leader, alleged that 'by not giving permission to Yediyurappa to expand his ministry, it was evident that there is no any internal democracy in the Saffron Party'.
