Modi wave shocks Congress in Jammu

December 24, 2014

Srinagar, Dec 24: The 2008 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections threw up a fractured mandate, resulting in a hung Assembly, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerging as the single-largest party with 28 seats, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delivering its best performance in the state, securing 25 of the 87 seats.

jammuNo single party was able to win enough seats to form a government on its own.

The Mufti Mohammad Sayeed-led PDP, which had 21 members in the outgoing Assembly, gained seven seats this time, while the Omar Abdullah-led National conference (NC) was the biggest loser—its tally coming down to 15 from 28 in 2008.

The Congress, the ruling NC’s coalition partner, also suffered a setback, with its tally coming down from 17 in 2008 to 12.

The BJP, powered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious campaign, more than doubled its tally of seats, with all gains coming from the Hindu-majority Jammu region. The party, which had 11 members in the outgoing Assembly, won 25 seats this time.

The Modi wave showed its impact on the Congress' performance in Jammu, where the deputy chief minister in the outgoing government and several of his cabinet colleagues lost to lesser-known BJP candidates.

While the Congress was decimated in Jammu, it gained in the Ladakh region, winning three of the four seats. It also won a handful of the five seats in the Kashmir Valley.

However, the Modi magic didn't appeal to voters in the 46 seats of the Muslim-majority Kashmir region and four seats in the Buddhist-dominated Ladakh region, where he had promised to usher in a new era of development if the BJP came to power. The party drew blank at both the places.  The BJP had fielded 33 candidates in Kashmir, all of whom lost, and couldn’t even finish runner-up anywhere.

The biggest losses for the NC came in Srinagar city, where it lost five out of eight seats. The party had picked up all the seats in Srinagar in 2008. Outgoing chief minister Omar Abdullah, who ditched his traditional family bastion Ganderbal and contested from two other constituencies, was crushed in Sonawar (Srinagar) by the PDP’s Mohammad Ashraf Mir, and managed to win Beerwah (Budgam) by just a few hundred votes.  The PDP’s chief ministerial candidate, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, retained the Anantnag constituency.

What they said then...

The National Conference will be a serious player in whatever unveils in Jammu&Kashmir in the next few days.
Omar Abdullah

outgoing CM

The option of forming the government, the option of supporting a government and the option of participating in a government are all open.
Amit Shah         BJP president

In 2016, it will be Bhag Mamata Bhag (run).
Siddharth nath singh
BJP national secretary

One thing is clears that we will not go with BJP. As far as they (PDP and NC) are concerned, we have had alliances with them.
Ghulam nabi azad
Congress leader

In Jammu and Kashmir we have done reasonably well, though we have lost two-three seats from what we got in last elections. But that is an expected after such a massive drubbing in Lok Sabha polls.
Ajoy Kumar
Congress spokesperson

I honestly am very rebellious by nature. I would love to sit in opposition and be very constructive opposition.
Sajjad lone
Peoples’ Conference chief

In 2002, we had 16 seats. There was credibility crisis and people voted against National Conference. Today also, people voted against NC?and Congress.

Indore, Aug 3: In a bizarre development, the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted bail to an accused in a sexual harassment case on the condition that he will request the victim to tie a ‘rakhi’ on him with a promise to protect her “to the best of his ability for all times to come”.

Justice Rohit Arya on July 30 also ordered the man to pay Rs 11,000 to the complainant as a “customary ritual usually offered by brothers to sisters” on Raksha Bandhan and seek her blessings while visiting her with his wife and a box of sweets. “The applicant shall also tender Rs 5,000 to the son of the complainant for purchase of clothes and sweets,” the order said.

The court directed the accused to take photographs and receipts of payment made to the victim and her son, which should be filed through his lawyer for placing on record of the case before the Registry.

The victim, a resident of Ujjain district, had alleged that her neighbour, Vikram Bagri, entered her house and sexually harassed her on April 20. The police registered a case under Sections 452 (House-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 354 (A) (Sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The order said the man, in jail for more than two months, was released on bail, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with “one solvent surety in the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court, on the condition that he shall remain present before the court concerned during trial,” and comply with conditions under Section 437 (3) of CrPC, along with other conditions.

New Delhi, Feb 16: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal was on Sunday sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row at Ramlila Maidan here, after his party registered a massive victory in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly polls.

Kejriwal was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

The sprawling Ramlila Maidan reverberated with sounds of thousands of people cheering for the AAP leader.

Kejriwal who received a hero's welcome here had extended an invitation to the people of Delhi urging them to attend the swearing-in ceremony to witness "the son of Delhi" taking oath today.

The AAP nearly repeated its 2015 performance in the elections, sweeping the Assembly polls winning 62 seats in the 70-member Assembly, in the face of a high-voltage campaign by the BJP, which fielded a battery of Union Ministers and Chief Ministers in its electioneering spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah.

New Delhi, May 4: Rebutting the Congress' criticism, the BJP said on Monday that the railways has subsidised 85 per cent of ticket fare for special trains being run for migrant workers and the state governments have to pay the remaining 15 per cent.

The ruling party also accused the Congress of promoting indiscriminate movement of people which, it said, would lead to "faster spread" of coronavirus infection "just like we saw in Italy", and asked if this is what Sonia Gandhi wants.

The counter-charge from BJP leaders, including its spokesperson Sambit Patra and information technology department in-charge Amit Malviya, came after Congress president Sonia Gandhi hit out at the central government for making migrants pay for their train fare and asked her party's state units to pick the tab.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took a swipe at the railways, saying, on one hand, it is seeking ticket fare from people stranded in various states while on the other it is donating Rs 151 crore to the PM-CARES Fund.

Responding to him, Patra said, "Rahul Gandhi ji, I have attached guidelines of MHA which clearly state that 'No tickets to be sold at any station'. Railways has subsidised 85% & state govt to pay 15%. The state govt can pay for the tickets (Madhya Pradesh's BJP govt is paying). Ask Cong state govts to follow suit," Patra tweeted.

The BJP leader further clarified that for each 'Shramik Express', special trains being run for migrants to take them back to their native places during the lockdown, about 1,200 tickets to the destination are handed by the railways to the state government concerned.

State governments are supposed to clear the ticket price and hand over the tickets to workers, he said.

He said the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is doing so and asked Rahul Gandhi to tell the Congress-ruled states to follow suit.

Hitting out at Sonia Gandhi, Malviya tweeted, "Congress is obviously upset at how well India has handled Covid. They would have ideally wanted a lot more people to suffer and die. Promoting indiscriminate movement of people would lead to faster spread of infection, just like we saw in Italy. Is this what Sonia Gandhi wants?"

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy claimed that migrant workers returning home will not have to pay money as the rail travel will be free from now onwards.

"Talked to Piyush Goyal office. Govt will pay 85% and State Govt 15%. Migrant labour will go free. Ministry will clarify with an official statement," he tweeted.
