Guruvayur, Jun 16: Nine more students were arrested by Kerala police on charge of using invectives to describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a crossword puzzle in a college magazine.

namoThe arrested students are from Sree Krishna College in Guruvayur and activists of Students Federation of India, the student wing of CPM. Student editor Vibin Raj, sub-editor P K Shihab, editorial members V A Ashiq, U S Sajil, Lenin Vishnu, Sahil, Girish, Alwin K Benny, K S Sanoop and N P Sajib were arrested for using objectionable language against Modi in the journal.

"All the arrested students have been booked under section 153 of Indian Penal Code, which is regarding provocation with intent to cause riot," said Thrissur police commissioner P Prakash. They were later released on bail later.

Besides Modi, the students have allegedly mocked Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, party MP Shashi Tharoor as well as spiritual leader Mata Amrithanandamayi.

Police said the remaining three accused, chief editor and college principal D Jayaprasad, staff editor Santhosh and advisory board member P G Subindas, would be arrested soon.

NaMo

The college magazine titled 'Name' had used Modi's nickname 'NaMo' as a crossword clue with the purported solution 'NAyeente MOn' (son of a dog).

However, P Sanoop, who was part of the editorial team of the magazine, said that the content "was not intended to malign any person". Principal Jayaprasad said the controversial crossword was finalized without his and the staff editor's consent. "The content in question was not published with my knowledge or permission," he said.

The police commissioner seemed to corroborate this. "The complaints were lodged by ABVP and KSU. Evidence is clear against the accused students but at this point we don't have clinching evidence against the principal. More investigation is needed to ascertain whether the principal was involved."

The Guruvyaur Sree Krishna temple managing committee, which runs the college, had sought an explanation from the principal in connection with the case.

This was the second such case reported from the area after the campus magazine of a polytechnic college featured Mr. Modi in the list of “negative faces” along with Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, George Bush and a few other internationally-known figures.

The principal and a few students of the polytechnic college were arrested and let-off on bail last week after police had charged them under the same sections of the IPC.

Police also raided the polytechnic college and seized 392 copies of the magazine, a computer and hard discs of the designers of the magazine.

Belagavi, Feb 10: In comments that raised eyebrows, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who quit the Congress and joined the BJP and who took oath as minister last week, said his brother Satish has a bright future. The two siblings have rarely seen eye-to-eye — at least in public — in recent times.

He also trained his gun on Congress leader DK Shivakumar, sarcastically thanking the Congress MLA for his meteoric rise. “Had Shivakumar not stood against me, I would not have emerged as a tall leader in the state. I must thank him,” Ramesh said.

The Gokak MLA said Satish of the Congress, the most politically-savvy of the five Jarkiholi siblings, would reach “the top” in his political career. However, he advised him “to inculcate patience and adopt strategies”. “He should make his moves at the right time as timing is very important in politics,” Ramesh said.

He also urged Satish to keep his supporters happy. “Many of his followers are disappointed with his leadership because he does not extend a helping hand to his own people. In the present political climate, people do not endorse a leader who only talks about Buddha and Basava,” Ramesh said.

Ramesh took a dig at Lakan, the youngest sibling, saying, “Lakan speaks ill about me most of the time. He does not understand much. But we brothers are one when it comes to family. We are united when it comes to family matters, but when it comes to politics, we are at loggerheads.”

Mangaluru, Jan 10: Two members of a notorious honey-trap gang that used to lure rich men using women and then extort money from them by staging fake police raid have been arrested by the Dakshina Kannada district police.

Lohith, a resident of Kushalnagara, and Sharif from Vittal, were arrested in connection with a honey-trap case registered in Uppinangady police station. Jamal, Jeevan and Naushad, who were also involved in the case, are absconding.

Police said they received information that a few people under the guise of being Kerala police, were planning to raid a resort near Uppinangady where two couples were staying.

They were informed that they would threaten and try to extort money from them. The police were tipped off about the same by their counterparts in Kerala.

Police said the accused are experts in setting honeytraps, and were involved in similar crimes since a long time. Their modus operandi was to use two women from Mangaluru to lure their intended targets.

Once they trap their target, the woman and victim are sent to resorts. They then raid the resort posing as police officials, and click pictures in compromising positions of the victim with the woman.

They threaten to release the pictures on social media or TV channels, if they fail to pay up.

Police said the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh from each victim, but they denied to pay up. Irked by this, the accused took away the victims’ belongings such as phone, money and car.

The victims who believed that the accused were police personnel, asked them to take them to the police station. Instead of taking them to the police, the accused took them to a secluded place, where they claimed that they were putting the victims under house arrest. Police have seized an SUV from the accused.
