Moga bus molestation: Badal says will punish culprits, victim's family wants FIR against him

May 2, 2015

Chandigarh, May 2: Expressing deep shock over the Moga bus molestation incident that resulted in the death of a girl, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has said that he was “personally anguished” more because of the bus in which it happened, reports said Saturday.

Moga molestation case has come under immense fire as the victim mother-daughter duo was thrown off the bus which was owned by the Badal family.

Moga-bus-molestationThe deputy CM has called for severe punishment for those responsible for the tragedy however the victim's family, which has refused to even cremate the victim, wants an FIR to be registered against the bus owner, that is, the Badal family.

Issuing a statement two days after the incident, Badal said, "I am with the grieving family in their hour of extreme sorrow and want to assure them that those responsible for bringing this tragedy will be given exemplary punishment under the law of the land...I am personally and deeply anguished over the incident, the more so because of the bus in which it happened,” the ANI reported.

He also slammed the opposition parties for “latching on to” the Moga case to gain political mileage.

"I am deeply pained by the utterly irresponsible and inhuman statements emerging from some Congress leaders. Instead of helping in assuaging the wounded feelings of the affected family, the opposition leaders have been gleefully latching on to it as an opportunity to buy their lost political relevance in Punjab. That really saddens me," he added according to the ANI.

Devastated on the death of their daughter, the victim's parents have rejected Rs 20 Lakh compensation and a government job for her mother, who too was molested and pushed out of the bus.

The aggrieved family has also refused to cremate the victim.

The family is insisting that the owners of the bus, Orbit Aviation, be booked in connection with the offence and its road permits be cancelled, a demand vociferously supported by AAP.

The incident has provoked public outrage with opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, besides farmers and rights groups taking to streets in Punjab and Delhi.

Earlier in the day, Congress and AAP joined the agitating family and activists staging a protest in front of the Moga civil hospital where the injured mother of the deceased is undergoing treatment. The body of the girl is also lying in the mortuary.

A large number of Aam Aadmi Party activists led by Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann also held protest in front of the DSP office at Baghapurana.

Mann said, "This issue was also raised in Parliament yesterday. When law is equal in the country then why it is not being implemented with same spirit in Punjab.

When in Nirbhaya case the owners of bus were also booked in Delhi, then why not action should be taken against the Badal family who are the owners of Orbit Aviation."

New Delhi, May 10: The Delhi government has asked district magistrates to release 2,446 Tablighi Jamaat members from quarantine centres and ensure that they do not stay in any other place except their homes.

The district magistrates will explore the possibility of sending those Tablighi members, who belong to other states, in buses to their designated places in accordance with social distancing norms and other protocols, DDMA Special CEO K S Meena said in a letter to deputy commissioners (administration).

As man as 567 foreign attendees of the congregation held in Delhi's Nizamuddin area in March, will be handed over to the police, Meena said.

"They (foreign Jamaat attendees) will be handed over to police in connection with several violations like visa violation," a government official said on Saturday.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain had recently ordered the release of Tablighi members who have completed their required quarantine period in centres and tested negative for COVID-19.

"Out of such people belonging to Delhi, who could be released as per prescribed guidelines should be issued passes to travel from the quarantine centres.

"Under no circumstances, the aforesaid persons should be allowed to stay in any other places including mosques," Meena said in the letter.

In respect of those Tablighi members belonging to other states, it should be ensured by the nodal officer and the area ACP that such people reach their place of residence, he also said.

"The DC should also inform the respective resident commissioner of their states in respect of each and every movement of such persons from Delhi," the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Special CEO said.

Thousands of Tablighi Jamaat members had been taken out of its Markaz (centre) in Nizamuddin, where they had gathered for a religious congregation, and quarantined as the area became a major hotspot after a number of members tested positive for coronavirus.

On March 31, the Delhi Police's Crime Branch had lodged an FIR against seven people, including Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, on a complaint by Station House Officer, Nizamuddin, for holding the congregation.
