Money exchanger robbed of Rs 70 lakh in Jagraon

Ludhiana, Oct 18: Two armed men robbed an elderly money exchanger of Rs 70-lakh cash at gunpoint in Mohalla Guru Teg Bahadur of Jagraon on Sunday. The miscreants also took along victim’s scooter, leaving him and his 5-year-old grandson on roadside.

The incident has been captured in the CCTV cameras installed in houses along the street.

Vijay Kumar Chinna, 65, along with his 5-year-old grandson, was going to his shop, Chinna Money Exchanger, on a scooter when the accused intercepted him brandishing a gun. The miscreants then grabbed the bag containing Indian and foreign currency totalling Rs 70 lakh and fled away, taking along his scooter.

After being informed, police launched a manhunt to trace the miscreants, but to no avail.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Rachhpal Singh Dhindsa also visited the crime spot.

The DSP said prima facie the accused were aware of victim’s movements and had planned the crime accordingly. “The miscreants were waiting for the money exchanger to cross by. The police have procured the CCTV footage and trying to identify the miscreants,” he said.

Amaravati, Jul 31: Nine people have died after allegedly consuming sanitiser in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today, the police said.

Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal said the people had been consuming sanitiser for the past few days, mixing it with water and soft drinks.

"We are also investigating whether they laced the sanitiser with any other toxic substances," the official said.

"Their family members say these people have been consuming sanitiser for the past ten days. We are sending the sanitiser stocks, being sold in the area, for examination," he added.

Kurichedu in Prakasam district has been under lockdown due to rise in coronavirus cases and hence, liquor shops have also been shut since the past few days.

Habitual drinkers were said to be consuming sanitisers that have alcohol content, apart from illicitly distilled arrack.

The police said two beggars near a temple were the first to fall victim on Thursday night. While one of them was found dead at the spot, another died in the government hospital in Darsi town, they said.

A third person was also taken to the Darsi hospital late on Thursday night after he fell unconscious but he was declared brought dead. Six others who fell ill after allegedly consuming sanitiser, died this morning.

Others who fell ill after consuming sanitiser are undergoing treatment at their residences in the village, the police added.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Assets worth Rs 78 crore have been attached by the ED in connection with a money laundering probe against former ICICI Bank Chairman Chanda Kochhar and others, officials said on Friday.

A provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been issued for attachment of the properties that includes Kochhar's Mumbai-based house and some other assets belonging to a company linked to her, they said.

The book value of the attached assets is Rs 78 crore, they said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and others in a case of alleged irregularities and money laundering in giving loans by the bank to the Videocon group.

Bengaluru, May 21:Tragedy struck an elderly migrant worker who was looking forward to joining his family as he died on reaching a nearby railway station to board a Shramik Special train to his home state Madhya Pradesh, police said on Thursday.

The 69-year old man, who worked in a coffee estate in Chikkamagaluru, collapsed and died soon after getting down from a state-run KSRTC bus that brought him and others to the Chikkabanavara Railway station on Wednesday.

According to police, fellow labourers said he had been ailing for quite some time.

The cause of his death would be known only after a post-mortem, police added.

Karnataka government has been sending back thousands of migrant workers stranded in the state due to the COVID-19 lockdown by arranging the special trains.
