Monsoon deficient but there won't be power cuts: minister

Bengaluru, Jul 13: Energy Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday said that despite insufficient rainfall in Karnataka, the state government would take steps to ensure there was no power disruption in the coming months. powermini

Speaking to journalists here, he said the southwest monsoon had been deficient so far and there had been inadequate inflow into the reservoirs. Water levels in most of the reservoirs attached to hydroelectric stations are still low. “We will come out with an action plan to ensure adequate power is supplied to households, industries and farmers,” he said. The total demand for power in Karnataka is around 9,000 MW, he said.

He said a decision was taken in this regard after reviewing the demand and supply and assessing future needs. According to Shivakumar, the Centre has stopped supplying LED bulbs at subsidised rates. “This is not our decision. If the Centre continues the supplies, we will distribute the bulbs to consumers,” he said.

Shivakumar said he had raised the issue of supply of coal for thermal plants in Karnataka during his recent interaction with Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal. The latter gave an assurance that Karnataka will be allotted coal blocks in Chhattisgarh.

“Since the department has promised that there will be no power cuts, there is no other alternative but to purchase power. Tenders will be floated immediately to purchase power for nine months from September. We cannot say anything of the energy storage for the future now itself as it is only mid-July. At present, there is surplus. But water storage in hydel reservoirs is much below the capacity,” he said.

He added that at present, the demand was 8,710 MW against the availability of 9,375 MW. But hydel resources are just 25% of their capacity and that will not be sufficient for the future. Last year, the department had purchased power at Rs 4.08 per unit and the department will try to procure power at the same rate this year too, he said.

Earlier, British Deputy High Commissioner to India Dominic McAllister called on Shivakumar. The minister said Britain had evinced interest to finance the manufacture of smart meters. Smart meters, introduced in Mysuru on a pilot basis, will be extended to all districts soon, he said.

Kasaragod limping back to restraint level from much scared slippage into stage-3 of coronavirus

Kasaragod, Apr 17: Even as this district continue to remain in the high-alert red zone category of Covid-19, Kasaragod has slowly but steadily been limping back to restraint level of the pandemic from a possible slipping into a stage-3 of community spread early this month.

Thanks to the stringent and committed measures implemented by the district administration crisscross the district besides total isolation of few localities by enforcing triple lockdown.

The district had been a Covid-19 hotspot ever since an NRI who returned from the Gulf violated quarantine protocol and travelled wide and far by meeting and contacting with several people including two MLAs of the district. That apart the irresponsible attitude of the people who broke the rules of quarantine and lockdown norms also made things go from bad to worse resulting in contributing for a near-half of the total positive cases in the state at the beginning of April.

Supreme Court grants bail to 17 Gujarat mass massacre CONVICTS, asks admin to find them work

New Delhi, Jan 28: The Supreme Court of India today granted bail to 17 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002 Gujarat massacre case, pending their appeal before the Supreme Court.

The convicts also have to participate in social and spiritual services, said the court, announcing the riders for bail.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant directed for the convicts to be segregated into two groups to be sent to Indore and Jabalpur.

District legal authorities in Indore and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh have been asked to ensure that the convicts do the spiritual and social work the court has asked for.

The Supreme Court has also asked the administration to find them work for livelihood. The state legal services authority has been asked to file a compliance report as also report on their conduct.

The case concerns the mass killing of 33 innocent Muslims - mostly women and children - who were burnt alive at Sardarpura village in March 2002.

This was part of the mass massacre that swept through Gujarat in the aftermath of the death of train passengers on Sabarmati Express in Godhra on Feb 27, 2002. Thousands of innocent Muslims were killed and raped in the three-day violence. The victims include hundreds of children including newborns.

In 2016, the Gujarat High Court had upheld the conviction of 17 accused in the Sardarpura massacre case.

Earlier, a Special SIT court had convicted a total of 31 persons in the case, after three years of trial against 73 persons from Sardarpura and nearby villages.

For the sake of God please do not call them JUSTICE. If they str aware of meaning of word justice then they would have given death penalty to all the culprits. So sad that supreme court of india is running as per the instructions of MODI govt. RIP Justice

Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office sealed after staffer tests positive

Bengaluru, Jun 27: The Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office on Infantry Road has been sealed after one of the staffers tested Covid-positive. It will remain shut from June 27 to 29.

A senior police officer from the administrative department, in a media release, stated that almost the entire staff has been asked to work from home, while some have told to work from sub-divisions of DCP’s offices.

It is said that one of the staffers, who recently reported for duty at Anti-Terror Cell (ATC), tested positive on Friday, and officials took a decision to seal the premises after the media got wind of it.

Earlier, a function for Drug Observation Day too was held on the premises on Friday. The staff has not been asked to go on quarantine.

Only a few staffers have been asked to come to the police control room situated in the same building.
