Monsoon turns vigorous over coastal Karnataka

Mangaluru, Jul 23: Southwest monsoon turned vigorous over Karnataka’s coastal and districts coming under western ghats causing landslips, affected movement of traffic and several rivers witnessed huge inflows causing flooding.

Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district received the highest rainfall of 23 cms during the last 24 hours while temple town of Kollur in Udupi district also received torrential rains measured at 21 cms.

The other centres that received extremely heavy rainfall were Kumta 20, Shirali PTO 18, Kota, Udupi 17 each, Kundapur 16, Gersoppa 15, Mani, Ankola, Karwar 14 each, Mangaluru AP, Siddapura, Honavar 13 each, Mudubidre , Manki and Agumbe 12 each.

The district administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have declared holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday, July 23 as part of precautionary measures. 

There were dozens of incidents of rain damage in the region. Also landslips and wind brought down many trees and electric poles in last 24 hours. 

Mescom officials said several electric poles and a couple of transformers were damaged in the city. Half a dozen poles were damaged in Kuthar area alone due to strong winds. 

Today an electric pole with transformer fell on a parked car in Mangaluru. Officials, however, said they still don’t have a count of damaged electric poles as they were busy with clearing operations and restoring power supply to affected areas.

Tumkur, Feb 9: A special puja was performed at the Durga Parameshwari temple and the Shaneshwara temple in Karnataka's Rangana Halli village to save people from coronavirus.

Yashwanth Shastri, a priest, said: "We performed this special puja on Friday to save the world from virus and diseases like corona and H1N1."

"Our ancestors used to perform a special puja for the betterment of society and save the world from viruses when they attacked," he said.

Coronavirus originated in China's Wuhan city in December last year and has since spread to various cities around the world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak as a global health crisis.

Mangalore, Jan 21: Former city councillor and social activists Naveenchandra and social activist Vidya Dinker have been invited to participate in two-day National Level Consultation on Urban Governance which will take place on January 22 and 23 at Juniper Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Urban governance stakeholders of 20 states and one union territory will be participating in this national level consultative seminar. The participants will include elected representatives, NGO representatives and urban planning experts. The seminar is being organised by Mumbai based Prajna Foundation, which has undertaken an in-depth study of the governance of the 20 states and one union territories.

Having served several terms as a corporator of Mangaluru City Corporation, Naveenchandra is knowledgeable in matters relating to urban governance. He is very popular in his constituency. Vidya Dinker is a well known city based social activist. She is the Coordinator, Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development.

Vidya Dinker I can understand but Naveen i don't know on what qualifications and credentials he has been selected and to say he is Popular in his constituency is a Misnormer .  Just visit kambla ward once and speak to people and you can understand it better !!!

Manglauru, Jun 1: The southwest monsoon has made an onset over Kerala, marking the commencement of the four-month long rainfall season, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.

"The southwest monsoon has made an onset over Kerala," IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

The four-month monsoon season from June to September accounts for 75 per cent of rainfall in the country.

Private forecaster Skymet Weather on May 30 had declared arrival of monsoon, but the IMD had differed, saying conditions were not ripe then for such an announcement.

Orange alert

Meanwhile, coastal Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, which is receiving sporadic rains for past couple of days, is on orange alert.

Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh declared the orange alert following IMD’s prediction of heavy rainfall in the region.
