Udupi, Jan 15: It’s just a case of hoping, a relative of the one of the missing fishermen said. Hope is tenacious but it is starting to fade now for the families of seven fishermen on board Suvarna Tribhuja boat that ventured into sea from Fisheries Harbour on December 13 and went missing off the Goa coast on December 15.

Two fishermen on the boat are from Udupi, the remaining five are from Uttara Kannada. The missing fishermen are: Chandrashekhar Kotian, 40, owner and captain of the boat; Damodar Salian, 40, both from Udupi; Laxman, 45, Sathisha, 35, Harish, 28, Ramesh, 30, from Kumta, and Ravi, 27, from Manki. A missing complaint was lodged at the Malpe police station on December 22.

Shyamala, wife of Mr. Chandrashekhar Kotian, and Mohini, wife of Mr. Damodar Salian, have been distraught since the boat went missing.

A teary-eyed Suvarna Thingalaya, father of Mr. Damodar Salian, said that his eyes are always looking towards the gate of his house.

“I keep hoping that he will come today or tomorrow. Damodar’s wife Mohini does not even have her meals properly. Damodar has nearly two-and-a-half decade experience of working on boats,” he said.

Ganesh Kotian, brother of Mr. Chandrashekhar Kotian, said his sister-in-law, Shyamala, is too sad to talk to anybody. “We keep consoling her,” he said.

Some of the family members are still hopeful that the fishermen will be traced.

Madhava Salian, brother of Mr. Damodar Salian, said he believed that the boat had been hijacked by pirates. If the boat had sunk, debris would have floted on the sea.

“Suvarna Tribhuja is a strong two-year-old boat. It takes about two hours for such a boat to sink. That is enough to send a distress signal. It also had life jackets. All the boats have GPS devices. Hence we want ISRO to track it down,” he said.

“If the boat had sunk, there would have been oil spill as such boats carry about 5,000 litres of diesel with them. Hence we believe it has been hijacked and the fishermen have been kept in captivity,” said Mr. Ganesh Kotian.

Has the boat sunk?

Kumara Chandra, Additional Superintendent of Police, Udupi, said on Monday that the Navy had started searching the area near Sindhudurg in Maharashtra through sonar technology to check if Suvarna Tribhuja had sunk.

He said the Navy had sent an email to this effect to the district police.

Meanwhile, the two teams of district police, along with fishermen from Malpe, which went to Goa and Maharashtra, and Kerala to search for the missing fishermen, a few days back, have drawn a blank.

Satish Kundar, president of Malpe Fishermen’s Association, said that about 350 boats had left from Malpe to search for the missing boat while also doing fishing. “Another 200 boats will leave Malpe for Maharashtra today to search for it. The police and navy are doing their search work, we are searching on our own,” he said.

Meanwhile, M. Manjunath Naik, Principal Secretary, Department of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, held a meeting with the representatives of the Malpe Fishermen’s Association here on Monday and explained the steps taken by the government to trace the missing boat. “He told us that the government had approached the ISRO and other departments concerned for the search operations,” Mr. Kundar added.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Wayanad, Apr 21: Panic gripped residents of Mananthavady and Mepaddi regions of the district after several cats in the region were found dead.

A group of people approached authorities after which the Animal Husbandry Department tested samples from the carcasses and found that the cat deaths were caused by Feline Parvovirus, which does not transmit to humans.

Speaking to ANI, Dr D Ramachandran, Chief Veterinary Officer, Wayanad said that Feline Parvovirus affects cats and vaccines are available to protect cats and keep the virus at bay.

"There were incidents of cat deaths in Mananthavady and Meppadi region of Wayanad district creating panic among the local residents. The officials of the Animal Husbandry department visited the spots for epidemiological investigations. The samples were collected and sent to the State Institute of Animal Diseases, which confirmed that the deaths were due to Feline Parvovirus. There is no need to worry as this virus does not spread to humans," he said.

A cat owner in Meppadi said that within a span of two-three days, over 13 cats had died in the region.

"We are afraid of these sudden cat deaths amidst coronavirus outbreak. We have informed the Health Department and Animal Husbandry department. Officials came here and collected the samples," she said.

Following complaints of violence against enumerators and registration of FIR with people declining to give information, the state government has asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to hold awareness programmes about it.

The planning, programme monitoring & statistics department has requested the home department to provide cooperation at the police station level while additional chief secretary P Ravi Kumar, in his letter to all DCs, has asked them to create awareness. According to sources, enumerators in T Narasipura town of Mysuru district faced resistance as some residents misunderstood the reason for this census.

A senior officer of the directorate of economics and statistics said that additional chief secretary (ACS- Planning, Programme Monitoring & Statistics Department) Shalini Rajneesh has written to the home department and superintendents of police of all districts seeking their help to create awareness about the economic census.

According to sources in the directorate, in many places, people are refusing to share information under the misconception that it is related to CAA/ NRC. “Many are mistaken about the economic census. As a precaution, police help has been sought,” an officer said.

Authorities in Mysuru said the 7th economic census began on December 20 and will conclude on March 30.

“In Mysuru city alone, we need to cover a population of 11 lakh. In T Narasipura, we faced problems due to misconceptions about Census and CAA. We reported the incident which happened in an area where minorities reside in large numbers,” he explained. Mysuru SP CB Rishyanth said his office has not received any direction in this matter.
