More than 60% of engineer graduates unemployed

Mar 18: According the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) more than 60% of eight lakh engineering students graduating from technical institutions remain unemployed. Putting these figures in other perspective means loss of 20 lakh graduates every year.

The tales of engineering graduates doesn"t end here. Less than 1% of engineering student participate in summer internship and only 15% of engineering programs offered by almost 3200 engineering college are accredited by the NBA (National Board of Accreditation)

To end this stream of ignorance and carelessness, HRD ministry is making all the efforts to bring some major changes in the India's Technical Education and the first action in this direction was the introduction of the single National Entrance Exam for getting admissions into various Technical colleges of India.

According to the senior MHRD official "NEETI (for admission to engineering programs) will be the first exam to be conducted by the National Testing Service (NTS), which will be completely computer-based. "In all probability, NTS will be ready by January 2018 to conduct the NEETI as well as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical courses. The exams will be conducted multiple times in a year."

According to the plans, the first exam of NEETI is most likely to be held in December 2017-January 2018, followed by another one in March 2018 and the third on May 2018.

The official also told that NTS will also conduct the entrance exam for IIT.

The examination pattern will be the same as that of IIT on the responsibility of conducting the exam is shifted to NTS. The AICTE has also set the board targets in order to raise the standard of technical education which includes the industrial exposure of at least 75% students in the form of summer internship.

HC refuses to entertain plea against domicile reservation in NLSIU, Karnataka

New Delhi, Jul 3: The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea challenging Karnataka government's decision to impose a 25 percent domicile reservation in the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru.

A division bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Subramonium Prasad observed that the impugned law is passed by the State of Karnataka, and the respondent university is also situated in Karnataka.

The court granted liberty to the petitioner to move the appropriate forum with their grievances.

The Karnataka Assembly had passed the National Law School of India (Amendment) Act, 2020 in March this year, which provided a 25 per cent horizontal reservation for students of Karnataka in the NLSIU.

The High Court observed that the main contesting parties in the present case were the NLSIU and the Karnataka Government. As the court did not show any interest in entertaining the plea, the petitioner withdrew the plea.

Mangaluru: St Agnes College celebrates 99th College Day and Merit Programme

St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, which is celebrating its centenary year, celebrated 99th college day and merit programme of the academic year 2019-20 in P.U College Auditorium on February 11.

Ms. Philomina Lobo, Retired Director, Secondary Education department of public instructions, Government of India was the chief guest of the programme. The programme began by evoking the blessings of God. Sr Dr M Jeswina A.C, Principal, St Agnes College, Sr Dr M Maria Roopa A.C, the Joint Secretary, Mr. Ronald Pereira PTA Vice President, Mr Charles Pais the Controller of Examinations ,Dr Subha Rao were present.

Ms. Seemanthini, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Applications presented the annual college report digitally, highlighting the achievements of the institution, staff and students for the academic year.

Addressing the students, Ms Philomina Lobo advised, “You have knowledge and intelligence but you need to pray for wisdom. Use your talents in the right way.” She also mentioned that the companies today are looking forward for skilful youngsters and asked the students to “be skilful” in order to achieve success in life.

Students received Principal's role of honour, various scholarships and merit certificates for their excellence in academics. The cabinet members of the current academic year were also awarded on the occasion. The Principal gave a token of gratitude to Ms Philomena Lobo, who is also an alumna of the college. Mrs Meera, HOD, Department of History proposed the vote of thanks.
