Mumbai, Jan 16: Moshe Holtzberg, who lost his parents in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday for the first time since the tragedy struck the family over nine years ago and said he was happy to visit the city.
“Shalom...bahut khushi [I’m very happy],” said a shy Moshe on arrival at the Mumbai airport shortly after 8 a.m.
The 11-year-old was accompanied by his grandfather, Shimon Rosenberg, who said he would visit Nariman House, where Moshe’s parents were killed in the terror attack in November 2008, and pray there.
“I feel very happy to come to India, to Nariman House where I am going to pray. I will say hi to the people of India. I feel very good in this country,” Mr. Rosenberg said.
Parents killed in siege
Moshe was two years old when his parents — Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and Rivka — were killed during the siege at Nariman House by 10 Pakistani terrorists in November 2008.
The Jewish couple ran a cultural and outreach centre for the Chabad-Lubavitch movement at the Nariman House in South Mumbai’s Colaba area.
Moshe’s Indian nanny Sandra Samuels saved the child during the terror attack.
The terrorists carried out the attacks over three days in the city and killed 166 people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Moshe and his grandparents during a visit to Israel in July last and told him that he could visit India anytime.
While meeting Mr. Modi, Moshe said, “I remember our connection to Nariman House. I hope I will be able to visit Mumbai and when I get older, live there.”
“Dear Mr Modi, I love you and the people in India,” the boy had said.

Munnar landslide death toll reaches 26; around 40 still missing

Idukki, Aug 8: Nine more bodies have been recovered from the landslide ravaged Pettimudi near Munnar in Idukki on Saturday. With this the death toll in the tragedy reached 26. Around 40 are feared to be still trapped under the debris or washed away.
The rescue operation by NDRF and Fire and Rescue Services that was stopped by Friday evening due to poor light and bad weather resumed by Saturday morning.
Horrifying scene prevailed in the area as relatives of the missing people screamed around in search of their beloved ones. As it is nearly 48 hours since the incident happened, the chances of recovering missing persons alive from the debris is becoming bleak. Three of the bodies recovered on Saturday could not be identified till evening.
Kerala Revenue Minster E Chandrasekharan, who visited the area on Saturday, said that search operation would be carried out until all the missing are recovered.
It was by around 11.30 pm on Thursday that landslide had hit the Nayamakkad estate of Kannan Devan Hills and Plantations. Settlement clusters of plantation workers where 83 persons were staying were reduced to debris as the huge rocks came bulldozing. Five of the residents were reported to be not in the spot while the mishap occured.
Meanwhile, heavy rains led to floods at many parts of the state. Red alert has been issued at Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad districts for Sunday also. A total of 11,446 persons of 3,530 families were shifted to relief camps across the state, of which major chunk is at Wayanad.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that water level at most dams is increasing swiftly.

Manish Sisodia does not have car on his name: Affidavit for Delhi polls

New Delhi, Jan 17: Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia does not have any car on his name, according to information shared in the poll affidavit filed by him for Delhi elections.
In the affidavit, it is also shown that while his self-acquired immovable property remained roughly the same as in 2015. His wife's self-acquired immovable property is worth roughly about Rs 65 lakh, as per his latest affidavit.
In the papers submitted during the nomination for 2015 Delhi polls, the senior AAP leader had declared that he owned a Maruti Swift car of make 2013.
However, in his 2020 affidavit, he has mentioned "nil" in the column for motor vehicles and other means of transport.
In the affidavit submitted on Thursday, his moveable assets were declared worth Rs 4,74,888 for 2018-19, as against Rs 4,92,624 for 2013-14.
In 2015, Sisodia had informed in his affidavit that he had bought a property in Vasundhara, Ghaziabad, worth Rs 5.07 lakh in April 2001. The approximate current market value of self-acquired property in 2015 was Rs 12 lakh.
In his current affidavit, the AAP leader has mentioned the same property. However, the approximate current market value of self-acquired property in 2020 has increased to Rs 21 lakh.
In his affidavit for the 2015 polls, Sisodia had also said that his wife had purchased a property in March 2008 costing Rs 8.70 lakh. At that time, the approximate value of her self-acquired property was Rs 20 lakh.

'300 JNU registrations blocked over fake Proctor probe'

New Delhi, Jan 13: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has alleged that the varsity administration has blocked the registration of 300 students on the basis of 'fake Proctor inquiries'.
The union had on Saturday asked students of the university to pay their academic tuition fee but not the hiked hostel fee.
"Today the Vice Chancellor first blocked the fee payment portal and then blocked the payment of tuition fees. It is clear that the VC was lying through the teeth when he said students want to register but are not being allowed to by protesters," JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said.
She said the VC has also blocked the registration of 300 students based on fake proctor enquiries which are not even completed.
"The truth is that it is the administration which does not want students to register and is blocking their registration," she said.
JNUSU vice president Saket Moon said that in the meetings held in HRD ministry, it was decided that the administration would take a lenient view on the students' protest and not take action against them.
He said many students, who opened the portal for registration found they had been academically suspended and could not register.
He said the JNUSU had softened its stand by saying that they would register by paying the old fees but that has been kept on hold.
On Sunday, the administration extended the date for the winter semester registration till January 15.
