Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 3: In an incident which has triggered shock and outrage and exposed chinks in the social security net, acute poverty and starvation forced a mother in the State capital to hand over four of her six children to the care of the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare.

Such was the plight of the family living in a shanty on a railway puramboke land at Kaithamukku that one of the children used to eat sand and mud to ward off hunger, according to the mother.

By Monday noon, the council took over the responsibility for the four older children – two boys aged seven and five and two girls aged four and three – and shifted them to the rescue shelter run by it. This was done with the mother’s written consent and the approval of the Child Welfare Committee under the Juvenile Justice Board on Monday.

By Monday night, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan instructed that the mother and the two younger children should be transferred to the Mahila Mandiram to ensure better care.

The plight of the family had come to light on Saturday after local people dialled 1517 and alerted the Thanal project under the council which extends assistance to children in trouble. A team, including Thanal State coordinator Bahuleyan Nair K., and social workers rushed to Kaithamukku.

Charge against father

“You cannot call it a house. Tarpaulin and flex sheets were strung as walls. There was just hot water boiling on a stove,” Mr. Deepak said. “The mother, in her letter to us, said that the children would die of hunger unless we took over their responsibility,” he said.

According to the mother’s petition, the father of the children, a daily wage labourer, is addicted to alcohol. He was also abusive to the children and herself, she had stated, according to council officials.

When the officials visited the houses, the parents made conflicting statements regarding the plight of the children.

Once the news broke, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation quickly swung into trouble-shooting mode. Mayor K. Sreekumar visited the family at Kaithamukku and promised a temporary job for the mother from Tuesday. “It's a very sad incident. It should not have happened in Thiruvananthapuram,” the Mayor said.

The family would also be allotted a unit in one of the completed flats, he said. He also declared the Corporation's intention to assume responsibility for the education of the children.

Shivamogga, Jun 30: The organic farmers' market in Shivamogga in Karnataka has seen a rise in the demand for organic fruits and vegetables in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents of nearby areas frequently visit the market to get fresh produce.

According to Sridhar, a farmer who sells his produce in the market, the demand for organic fruits and vegetables was very low before the coronavirus outbreak.

"I have been involved in organic farming for the last two decades but there was no real market. Since these days everyone is trying to boost their immunity, we are getting a lot of positive response from the locals," he told news agency.

Sridhar and other farmers come from villages near the city. They are authentic organic farmers under the Vikas Trust and Savayava Krishi Parivar, a federation of organic farmer's families based in Karnataka, and they promote pesticide and fertiliser free agriculture.

Gurumel Singh, who often comes to the local market said, "My family has started eating more organic fruits and vegetable now because of the pandemic. We have been told it is important to take care of our health and organic fruits and vegetables are good immunity boosters. The fruits I buy from the organic market are also much sweeter than the ones I get elsewhere."

Bengaluru, July 17: A 60-year-old woman who tested positive for Covid-19 allegedly ended her life in the Covid ward at KC General Hospital in the early hours of Friday.

The woman, the fourth Covid positive patient to end her life since April, was a resident of Mariyappanapalya near Jnanabharathi in West Bengaluru. She was found hanging from a window grille in the passage of the Covid ward around 5 am. She had used her sari to hang herself.

The police said that the woman was admitted to the hospital on July 1. She was responding well to the treatment and was almost cured. Her son was infected first and admitted to the same hospital. As she later tested positive and got admitted, her son was discharged on July 11. The police suspect that the woman may have resorted to the extreme step due to depression.

An investigating officer quoted doctors telling the police that they were about to inform the woman about her discharge date on Friday. Doctors were waiting for the report on her latest test before discharging her.

The woman’s body will be subjected to an autopsy as per the Covid standard procedure. The Malleswaram police have taken up a case of unnatural death. Investigations are on.

On July 11, a 70-year-old man ended his life in the toilet of the Covid ward in Victoria Hospital, while a suicide was reported in the same ward on June 26. A 60-year-old woman also hanged herself in the toilet. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were also admitted to hospital for Covid-19.
