A mother has lost her son, I can feel the pain: PM Modi on Rohith Vemula's suicide

January 22, 2016

New Delhi/Hyderabad, Jan 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday got emotional as he expressed anguish at the suicide of Hyderabad university student Rohith Vemula.

modi"A young son of my country, Rohith, was compelled to commit suicide, what his family must have gone through, I can feel the pain," PM Modi said addressing the convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow.

"A mother has lost his son, there cannot be a bigger grief," PM Modi said.

"Reasons (behind the suicide) and politics (on the issue) may have their own place but the fact remains that a mother has lost her son," he said.

Rohith Vemula had committed suicide on Sunday. He was staging protest along with four other dalit research scholars over their suspension following an alleged clash with some leaders of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

Rohith's suicide has kicked up a major row with Union HRD minister Smriti Irani and labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya coming under intense attack from political rivals, who have blamed them for the incident and demanded their removal.

Meanwhile, the Union HRD ministry has set up a judicial commission to look into the sequence of events leading to Rohith Vemula's suicide, based on report by the ministry's fact-finding team.

In Hyderabad, the demand for resignation of vice-chancellor Appa Rao grew louder on Friday with varsity students refusing to put an end to their agitation unless the Centre agreed to remove the VC from the post.

Backing them in this 'fight for justice' were several student union members from other states such as Tamil Nadu and Delhi who were seen making their way into the city campus along with several 'outstation' political leaders.

The Hyderabad University on Thursday had revoked the suspension of four dalit PhD scholars, who had been suspended along with Rohith Vemula.

Lucknow, Jul 2: Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti Thursday appeared in person before a special court here conducting trial in the 1992 Babri mosque demolition case.

The special CBI court is currently recording the statements of 32 accused under CrPC section 313 (court's power to examine the accused), a stage in the trial that follows the examination of prosecution witnesses.

The 61-year-old saffron clad BJP leader is the 19th accused to depose before the court in the over 27-year-old case. Thirteen other alleged accused, including former deputy prime minister LK Advani and senior BJP leaders MM Joshi and Kalyan Singh are yet to be examined at this stage. Their lawyers have indicated to the CBI court that they prefer to appear through video conferencing.

The mosque in Ayodhya was demolished in December 1992 by 'kar sevaks' who claimed that an ancient Ram temple had stood on the same site. The CBI court is conducting day-to-day hearings to complete the trial by August 31, as directed by the Supreme Court.

Bhopal, Jul 7: Anil Mishra, personal assistant to BJP Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, has tested positive.

He has been accompanying Scindia throughout his tours post-corona infection.

His contact trail is longer than that of Scindia. He has been in touch with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Mishra was present during Scindia's meetings with the MLAs and the swearing in ceremony of the MP ministry on July 2.

BJP sources say there is concern over the possible list of people who will be put in isolation to check the spread of the virus.
