Mangaluru, Dec 17: All roads led to Dr B R Ambedkar stadium at Panambur, Mangaluru, on Saturday evening as a grand opening ceremony marked the commencement of the Mangalore Premiere League - 2016.

LMPL 1

Cricket fans of Mangaluru and surrounding areas were in for a visual treat at the spectacular Inauguration of the third edition of the MPL which saw a delightful medley of cricket, entertainment and cultural extravaganza.

It was legendarily cricketer and former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin who formally inaugurated the biggest cricket carnival of coastal Karnataka.

Greeting the crowd in Tulu language, Namaskara Kudla, Mr Azaharuddin revived many memories of the year 1992 when he first showed his skills as a cricketer in this coastal city.

Highlighting the need for a cricket stadium in the coastal city, Azharuddin reminded the crowd about how the game evokes passions in a cricket crazy nation.

Advising all players to play the game in its true spirit, Azharuddin also lauded the efforts put up by the ground staff and the curator to provide a good outfield and a sporting wicket for the encounters to follow.

Praising the sponsors and the organizers behind the league, Azharuddin hoped that MPL will truly claim its place in the list of cricketing events that cricketers and cricket lovers would want to be a part of.

Post the brief inaugural speeches by guests and sponsors and Azharuddin administering the oath to the 12 participating teams, dazzling fireworks lit up the evening sky.

LED lights show, Russian fire stunts and sky lanterns enthralled spectators. This was followed by an exhibition match featuring Azharuddin XI and Roaring Tigers XI led by actor Arjun Kapikad.

Teams vying for the prestigious trophy are Redhawks Kudla, Team Elegant Moodbidri, Kankanady Knight Riders, Karavali Warriors Panambur, Karkala Gladiators, President Sixers Kundapura, Maestro Titans, Spark Eveners Bolar, coastaldigest.com, Surathkal Strikers, United Ullal and Udupi Tigers.

Mangaluru/ Bengaluru, May 10: Nearly 11,000 non-resident Kannadigas who are seeking repatriation from various countries across the world should be ready to shell out a huge amount for a two-week private quarantine in Karnataka before reaching their home.

The Kannadigas stranded in Gulf countries including UAE and Saudi Arabia have already expressed shock over the high airfare for repatriation during coronavirus lockdown. Another shocker is heavy quarantine fee once they reach their home state.

Officials in Mangaluru and Bengaluru have confirmed that administration has fixed charges for quarantine facilities starting from Rs 1,200 up to Rs 4,500, including food per day. 14 day quarantine will be mandatory for all healthy and asymptomatic international passengers. Hence, they should be ready to pay Rs 16,800  to Rs 63,000.

The other option is government quarantine centres: hostels run by social welfare, backward classes welfare and minority welfare departments but they are far from satisfactory. This is in stark contrast to the plush government quarantine facilities in Kerala.

In Mangaluru

The first repatriation flight to Mangaluru International Airport is expected to land on Tuesday, May 12 from Dubai.

The quarantine facilities include lodges, hostels and service apartments. Rates are fixed based on four categories: basic, economy, medium and premium. The basic facilities are mainly hostels of educational institutions, and the rest are budget and star hotels, said Rahul Shinde, probationary IAS officer, who is In-charge of the quarantine facilities for those being repatriated.

In Bengaluru

As many as 350 international passengers are set to arrive in Bengaluru at 3 am on Monday, May 11. So far, nobody has opted for government quarantine facilities, according to Lakshman Reddy, Joint Director, Social Welfare Department.

In Bengaluru, there are 55 hostels of the social welfare department, 51 of the backward classes welfare department and 12 of the minority welfare department. “We provide them with three square meals a day,” he added.

Bengaluru, May 7: Fear and anxiety gripped migrant workers who lined up at police stations in the city on Wednesday to register for train services without knowing that the state government had cancelled the train facility.

Senior officials in South Western Railway said they were ready to run special trains for migrant workers. On Tuesday evening, the state government decided to withdraw the requests made for 13 such trains to north India after realtors said they need the labourers here.

Migrants continued to stream into the railway station at Majestic, Bangalore International Exhibition Centre and even the bus station hoping for some travel arrangement. Many who were aware of the government web portal, stood in front of the BBMP ward office or police stations for enrolment.

In Varthur, over 100 migrants stood in front of the police station and sought to know what happened to the forms they had submitted four days ago. "We first went to the BBMP office and were shooed away by an official who directed us to go to the police station. We want to go home and demanded that the police help us. There was no response first. Then they came out and beat us," said Pintu Kumar from Mohanpur of Bhagalpur district in Bihar.

Though a video clip accidentally shot by Kumar showed two police personnel charging the cane at them, a police officer from the Varthur station, however, disputed the claim. "The video doesn’t show the cane landing on any person. We were beating the seat and tyre of two-wheelers to send the migrants away," he said.

At Mahadevapura, the workers came in groups and submitted the forms at the police station.

At the railway station in Majestic, a group of labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand had walked from several areas in south Bengaluru only to be told that there is no train. Mahendra, a labourer from Jharkhand, said they received 5 kg rice and nothing else in the last 45 days. "Now, I don’t want food. I don’t want the job or money. I can't get stuck here. I want to go home,” he said.

'Restore dignity'

Activists and leaders wrote an open letter to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa questioning the decision to cancel trains without consulting labourers and protesting the violation of their fundamental rights.

The letter had support of 522 organisations and individuals, including Dalit rights organisations and trade unions. It urged the government to restore the dignity of the migrant workers. "We demand recognition of the autonomy and dignity of the migrant workers to decide their travel plans. No one should be forced either to stay back or to return to their home states," it said.
