Muharram charity proves costly: 2 die while standing in queue

Bengaluru, Sept 29: Two elderly persons, including a woman, died due to unease after standing in a serpentine queue to collect advance food coupons issued by a ‘philanthropist’ on account of Muharram at Mittaganahalli village near Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The Bagalur police arrested the ‘philanthropist’ identified Syed Asif, a resident of Mittaganahalli, on the charge of negligence leading to two deaths.

The deceased have been identified as Anwar Pasha (65), of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh and Rahmath Unnisa (70), a resident of Chikkaballapur.

The police said that following Asif’s announcement that would distribute food coupons to the poor and his community in the blessed month of Muharram, nearly 4,000 people gathered at Mittaganahalli. 

He, however, did not inform the police about the gathering and provided no basic facilities like chairs and drinking water. 

Many elderly persons and children began queuing up and around 9.30 am. Pasha and Rahmath felt uneasy and collapsed on the ground. Both were rushed to the hospital but doctors declared them brought dead.

The police arrested Asif and booked him under provisions of section 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC and are investigating.

Mangaluru, Feb 2: A local court on Saturday remanded Aditya Rao,the suspect in the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) bomb case, to two weeks judicial custody.

Rao was produced before the Sixth Judicial First Class Magistrate Court after the 10-day police custody expired.

Rao has been in police custody since January 22 after he surrendered before the police in Bengaluru on January 21 and was later brought here.

He had allegedly planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the airport on January 20 triggering panic and later made a hoax call to the airport terminal that a bomb had been planted in an IndiGo flight.

During the last ten days, police took the accused to several places in the city and Udupi where he had frequented in the recent past.

He was also taken to the room where he stayed while he was working at a hotel in the city.

Udupi, Jan 16: Admar Mutt Junior seer Eshapriya Theertha Swami is all set to take over the reins of Krishna Mutt during the 250th Paryayotsava, scheduled to be held on January 17 and 18.

The uniqueness lies in the fact that the Admar Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Krishna Mutt in this Temple town Udupi, ushers in the new Paryaya cycle (32nd). The Paryaya of outgoing seer Vidyadheesha Theertha Swami of Palimaru Mutt, Admar’s dwandwa (associate) mutt, marks the end of the cycle of eight mutts.

Under the system initiated by the Madhwa philosopher and saint Madwacharya, the seers of Ashta mutts would take turns to worship Lord Krishna every two months. Seer Vadiraja (1481-1601) ended the system and introduced the system of f running the temple administration once in two years.

Bengaluru, May 27: Mebina Michael, who contested in Pyate Hudgir Halli Life season 4, is killed in a road accident on Tuesday. The incident occurred on National Highway 75 at 4.30 pm in Devanahalli in Nagamangala taluk, Mandya district.

As per the reports, Mubiena along with two others were travelling to Somavarpet from Bengaluru. Their car collided with a tractor, which was taking a U-turn, they were immediately rushed to the Adichunchanagiri Medical College hospital.

Later, the injured were shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru for further treatment and Mebina died on the way, while the two are are battling for lives with serious injuries. A case has been filed at Bellur police station.
