Mullaperiyar dam: Jayalalithaa questions Centre for entertaining Kerala's request

Chennai, Jun 11: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has questioned the Centre for "entertaining" Kerala's request for approving environment study to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar in her state, saying it was in contravention to the Supreme Court order.

Jayalalithaa In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said the approval of Terms of Reference to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment Study for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar, was in "gross violation" of a Supreme Court order on this issue.

She also sought Modi's intervention in the matter.

In a letter dated June 10, Jayalalithaa said this was in "violation of the Constitution Bench Order of the Supreme Court," as Kerala was seeking Centre's approval" for the Environmental Impact Assessment study for construction of the new dam in place of the existing structure.

Kerala's act was in "utter contempt" of the May 2014 Supreme Court order which had held that the existing Mullaperiyar Dam was structurally, hydrologically and seismically safe and had "negatived in unequivocal terms, the offer of Kerala for the construction of a new Mullaperiyar Dam", she said.

Kerala's review petition on this issue had also been dismissed and a "finality" reached on the matter but the state government was "seeking to subvert" the apex court order by "stealth", seeking approval of the Terms of Reference to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessment study, she said.

The Tamil Nadu government's interlocutory application in Supreme Court seeking to restrain Kerala from conducting the study was scheduled to come up next month, Jayalalithaa said in the letter which was released by the government today.

At this juncture, it was "understood" that the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, had, in a meeting, examined the Terms of Reference suggested by Kerala for conducting the study for construction of a new Mullaperiyar Dam, she said.

She said the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, has informed vide the Press Information Bureau's press release dated 4.6.2015, that no approval has been granted for carrying out Environmental Impact Assessment study for construction of a new Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki District of Kerala.

However,".... I would like to point out that the very fact of entertaining the Government of Kerala's request and considering the same by the Government of India for approving the Terms of Reference to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment Study for the construction of a new dam is itself a gross violation of the Decree and Order of the Supreme Court dated 7.5.2014."

"In fact, the Government of India should have desisted from entertaining and considering the proposal and ought to have remitted the proposal back to the Government of Kerala," she said.

Under "these circumstances", Jayalalithaa sought Modi's personal intervention, requesting him to instruct the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change and its agencies, "to desist from entertaining and considering the proposal of Kerala government in future and also to negative to the proposal and return it to Kerala."

Muslim population rose in India because they got 'special rights': Yogi Adityanath

Jan 15: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Tuesday that the Muslim population in India increased manifold since the partition because they were given special rights and facilities, according to a report by The Indian Express.

"The Muslim population in India has increased manifold since 1947, it has gone up by seven to eight times. No one has any objection. If they, as citizens of the country, work for development, they are welcome. Their population has increased because they have been given special rights and facilities. All possible steps were taken to ensure their growth," Adityanath said while addressing a rally in Gaya organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

He asked the audience, "But what happened in Pakistan?" Claiming that the Hindu population in Pakistan had decreased since 1947, he asked why it was so.

Yogi said that the countrywide anti-CAA protests are a "conspiracy" hatched from afar by those resentful of a united and grand India and these are being aided by a "crooked" opposition. He further charged that those opposing the legislation were committing the "paap" (sin) of working against national interests.

"For taking such a step, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah deserve acclaim. Instead, they are being attacked", Yogi lamented.

He himself contradicts his statements. He claims the Muslim population rose 8-9 (according to him) times since 1947. If he was educated its simple 73 years have passed the population grows. Still, the Muslim population is only a minority against the majority. He talks about special rights and facilities given yes agreed but not by him it's by the Constitution of India and for all the minorities. So it's not you its Constitution of India. The majority of the people are against the act CAA is against the very fundamental of the Constitution of India which PM & HM are taking away from the people. If you disagree, disrespect, go against it then you are against the country itself in Hindi deshdruhi.

I and B Minister Prakash Javadekar condemns alleged attack on Arnab Goswami

New Delhi, Apr 23: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prakash Javadekar, on Thursday condemned the attack on Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami saying that this is "against democracy".

"We condemn the attempt to attack renowned journalist Arnab Goswami. Essentially, we condemn every attack on any journalist. Because this is against democracy," the Union Minister said.

"It is really ironical that those who preach tolerance have become so intolerant. Therefore, we condemn this attempt. We appeal to the collective wisdom that this is undemocratic. As per present law, definitely, police takes action, if there is a complaint," said Javadekar.

Two persons were arrested on Thursday morning for allegedly attacking Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and his wife Samyabrata Ray in Mumbai.

If these Chinese apps are threat to nation, how they functioned for years, asks Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Jul 2: The Shiv Sena on Thursday termed the ban on 59 Chinese apps by the Indian government as a "digital strike" and asked if these apps were a threat to the national security, how did they operate for so many years.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' sought to know when did the Centre realise these apps were a threat to the national security.

By banning the Chinese apps, Prime Minister Narendra Modi protected the interests of Indian internet users and his courage has be lauded, the Marathi publication said.

India on Monday banned 59 apps with Chinese links, including TikTok, UC Browser, SHAREit and WeChat, saying they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country.

"If these apps were a threat to national security, how is it that these apps were functioning without any hurdles for so many years. If the opposition says the government neglected national security,then what will the Centre's stand be?" the Shiv Sena asked.

It said questions should be raised on all the previous governments for "allowing national data to go out of the country".

China has expressed displeasure over the Indian government's decision, the Marathi daily said, adding that Chinese soldiers are "still not ready to leave the Galwan Valley (in Ladakh)".

The Sena said it took the sacrifices of 20 soldiers for the government to realise Indian data was being illegally taken out of the country.

"The government took revenge by a digital strike," it stated.

There have been complaints earlier that users' data on Chinese apps was illegally sent out of the country, and apps like TikTok were "promoting vulgarity", it said.

"Many TikTok stars had reportedly joined the BJP," the Sena claimed. "What will happen to them?" it asked.

There is a need to break China economically, but that will not happen by banning its apps. The issue is about trade and investment between the two countries, it said.

"The largest Chinese investment is in Gujarat.

Chinese company Huawei has got the contract to set up 5G network in India. This company having keys to India's digital economy is akin to the Chinese Communist Party owning the Indian economy in future," it said.
