Sirsi, Dec 12: A day after unleashing violence in Kumta town in Uttara Kannada district, the saffron groups on Tuesday resorted to violent protest at Sirsi town in the name of Paresh Mesta, whose dead body was found in Honnavar under mysterious circumstances last week.
The saffron groups had called for a bandh in Sirsi on Tuesday in order to exert pressure on the police to arrest the “culprits” behind the death of Mesta. According to them, Mesta was tortured and murdered by Muslim goons and then dumped into a lake.
Even though the post-mortem report has proved that most of the claims of BJP and other Hindutva groups were false, the saffron party has refused to stop its agitation in the district, which is represented by hardcore Hindutva leader Anant Kumar Hegde in the Lok Sabha.
During Tuesday’s protest in Sirsi, miscreants among the aggregators began pelting stones at police vehicles.
The unruly mob threw stones indiscriminately. Even media people were hurt in the violence as also the police, who tried to disperse the mob.
Tyres have been set on fire on the highway at many places in the town.
BJP leader and MLA Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, who participated in the protest march, was also arrested by the police along with Hindutva activists.
The police were able to contain the damage and restore peace through lathi charge, tear gas shells and firing in the air.
