Music not haram, singing is: Quba Mosque imam

May 29, 2016

Jeddah, May 29: The imam and preacher of the Quba Mosque in Madinah has said that music is not haram or forbidden.

Sheikh Saleh Al-Maghamsi clarified that he was referring to music, not singing, which he said is haram.

saleh“The nation is in bad need of novelty and modernization, and I strongly believe in this, whether people accept my views or not,” he said during a talk show on MBC channel hosted by Yasser Amr and reported by local media.

Al-Maghamsi addressed a number of issues, including music, during the show. “I am not obliged to respond to any criticism on this issue. As for music, three Muslim scholars have said different things, although most of them agreed it is singing, not music, that is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Music is not talk, it is instruments, which is not specifically mentioned in the Holy Qur’an.”

He said that singing nowadays mostly involve men and women together, and this is forbidden. “I was asked about music in mobile phones and the main issue here is criminalizing people and making the issue of music as if it is our main or primary cause.”

On the issue of building mosques, Al-Maghamsi said: “There are other areas also that we need to focus on. Mosques are everywhere, thanks to Allah the Almighty ... every rich man builds a villa and a mosque in front of it.”

He added: “Building a mosque is good and recommended but building health facilities to treat poor patients and places for the displaced and other welfare services for the community are also important.”

I give benefit of doubt to him. I assume that when he meant music, it is traditional daff, sound of water, birds and not the modern music instruments like harmonium, guitar etc. And when he said singing is haram, I assume that he is referring to modern singing involving words/verses that are vulgar. May Allah (swt) help us to be steadfast in the deen of Allah(swt).

Riyadh, May 22: The family of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Friday said that they forgave his killers. Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who had written columns critical of Saudi Arabia, was brutally killed in October 2018, allegedly at the behest of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

“In this blessed night of the blessed month [of Ramadan] we remember God’s saying: If a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah,” Jamal Khashoggi’s son Salah Khashoggi said in a tweet. “Therefore, we the sons of the Martyr Jamal Khashoggi announce that we pardon those who killed our father, seeking reward [from] God almighty.”

The legal outcome of this announcement is not yet clear. Earlier, Salah Khashoggi said he had “full confidence” in the judicial system, and that the accused were trying to exploit the case.

Jamal Khashoggi’s body was said to have been dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and disposed of elsewhere, but his remains were never found.

Abu Dhabi, Jun 17: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has allowed students still enrolled in universities overseas to obtain exceptions to attendance policies at their respective academic institutions in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the ministry said that the move stems from its keenness to ensure the continuity of education for those students and to maintain effective channels of communication with them.

Students' applications for exceptions to academic attendance in universities due to Covid-19 should be submitted following the end of the academic year, and not after the academic semester, via the following email: [email protected].

In their email, students have to explain the reasons for the required exceptions and should include an official message from the university concerned.

Scholarship approval issued by the Ministry of Education for studying abroad should also be attached.

The student's score reports for the academic years spent in the host countries and the duration of each academic year should also be attached, in addition to an entry and exit report of the student from the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship.
