Muslim groups decry ‘murderous politics’, urge people to defeat communalism

Mangaluru, Jan 12: Thousands of Muslims from across Dakshina Kannada district on Friday converged at Nehru Maidan in the city to register their protest against the recent coldblooded murders of elderly Muslim man Ahmed Basheer and Hindu youth Deepak Rao.

Most of the speakers at the condolence-cum-protest meet jointly organised by various local Muslim groups decried the Sangh Parivar and communal outfits for “playing political games over dead bodies of innocent Hindus and Muslims” ahead of looming Karnataka assembly polls.

Deepak and Basheer were attacked by two separate gangs on January 3 at Katipalla and Kottara Chowki. The former died on the spot while the latter breathed his last at a hospital on January 7. Police have already arrested the alleged murderers in both cases.

Addressing the gathering at protest meet, Haji Hameed Kandak, a local Muslim leader, said that the police should unmask the masterminds behind the murders. “Police have only arrested those who committed the murders. But, those who planned the murders to create communal unrest and gain political mileage have not yet been arrested,” he lamented.

He urged the people of all the communities to get united and defeat those who try to create divide between the followers of different faiths. “We don’t need to hold swords to fight the anti-social elements. Our unity is their defeat,” he added.

S B Darimi, Khateeb of Puttur Juma Masjid, said that Muslims do not expect appeasement from the government. “It’s the duty of government to empower Muslims economically, socially and politically. Appeasement is of no use,” he said.

Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, advocate and human rights activist, said that communal harmony is the need of the hour in coastal Karnataka. “Communal goons have no religion. They are enemies of their own community and religion. Hence all should oppose them,” he added.

Yasir Hasan from PFI, Rafeeuddin Kudroli from Uniwef, former Mangaluru mayor K Ashraf and DK wakf panel chief Kanachur Monu also spoke on the occasion. Slain Basheer’s son Ibrahim, Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava, Shafi Bellare and Suhel Kandak were present among others.

Bengaluru, May 1: Karnataka government has assigned State Nodal Officers after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order regarding the inter-state movement of stranded migrant workers, tourists, pilgrims and students during the lockdown period.

The Nodal officers have also been appointed for coordination with 11 different states.

In an order issued on Thursday, Karnataka Government wrote, "To facilitate smooth and orderly movement of persons across State borders as per SOPs, the undersigned, in the exercise of powers conferred under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and in the capacity as Chairman, State Executive Committee, hereby appoint the following officers as Nodal officers to coordinate with Nodal Officers of States/Union Territories (UTs) mentioned against their names."

Dr Rajkumar Khatri, IAS and Arun Jeji Chakravarthy, IPS will be overall in charge of the movement of stranded people from outside States/UTs to Karnataka.

N Manjunatha Prasad, IAS and P S Sandhu, IPS will be overall in charge of the movement of stranded people from Karnataka to other States/UTs.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: After the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reduced the syllabi for Classes 9 to 12 due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Karnataka government has followed the suit. The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapters on legendary south Indian rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent. 

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

The trimmed textbooks uploaded on the website of the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT) by Karnataka state Textbook Society revealed removal of chapters on Tipu Sultan for the seventh grade.

Justifying the decision, officials said, "students study similar chapters in Class 6 and more in the 10th grade." Yet another senior official from the Text Book Society said, "Trimming does not mean we have removed half of the syllabus from textbooks. It is only keeping in mind the repetition we have condensed the chapters. In case students study about a particular dynasty in higher grades, then the same had been removed from lower grades."

A few months ago, there was an uproar over dropping of content on Tipu Sultan and MLAs from the ruling BJP also demanded the same and petitioned to the Chief Minister. Even an expert committee led by Prof Baraguru Ramachandrappa suggested to not drop any content on the historic figure. However, the department still decided to drop lessons from one of the classes while keeping the syllabus short for the next 120 active academic days.

Earlier this month, a controversy had erupted over the CBSE's decision to omit topics like federalism, secularism, citizenship, etc while reducing the syllabus for Classes 9 to 12. The education board had issued a detailed clarification later, stating that topics claimed to be dropped "are either being covered by the rationalised syllabus or in the Alternative Academic Calendar of NCERT".

"The rationalisation of syllabus up to 30 per cent has been undertaken by the Board for nearly 190 subjects of class 9 to 12 for the academic session 2020-21 as a one-time measure only. The objective is to reduce the exam stress of students due to the prevailing health emergency situation and prevent learning gaps," it said.

Last week, the Congress in Uttar Pradesh expressed its concern over 'deliberate and systematic' deletions of chapters related to the freedom struggle and the party's role in it from the Class 10-12 syllabi of the Secondary Education Board.

Bhatkal, May 9: A day after 12 covid-19 positive cases reported from Bhatkal, seven more tested positive for the coronavirus in the town today. 

The new patients are: a six-month-old baby, a two-and-a half-year-old child, two girls aged 17 and 23, a 50-year-old woman and two elderly men aged 65 and 68 years.

The source of all these cases is said to be the First Neuro hospital located at Padil in Mangaluru where a covid-19 patient from Bantwal had undergone treatment a month ago. Around 20 days ago an 18-year-old girl from Bhatkal, who had been to the same hospital was tested positive for the covid-19. 

After the confirmation of 12 covid-19 positive cases yesterday, the throat swab of 60 people, who were in contact with them were sent for testing. Among them seven people – six relatives and a friend – were tested positive today.
