Delivering a talk on ‘Future of Democracy in India’ at a programme organized by the Muslim Lekhakara Sangha (MLS), a Kannada literary association for Muslims, to honour its annual literary award winners at Town Hall in the city on Friday evening, Ms Setalvad called upon the people for a collective fight against fascist and communal forces.

She asserted that the ones who are ruling India and dreaming of a Hindu nation were not part of India’s freedom movement against the British colonialists.

Expressing frustration over saffronization of education, she said that in states like Gujarat and Haryana primary school students are being taught that modern science and practice of plastic surgery was prevalent among ancient Hindus.

Reiterating that fascists in India have been misusing religion to spread violence, she said consolidation of political power and implementation of the agenda of ‘divide and rule’ are among the multiple motives behind the eruption of communal violence in the country. Through this, religion is being misused by political powers and the masses are being mislead, she claimed.

“We should not be a religion-based nation. Everybody has an equal share of citizenship. But, there are forces which do not believe in the Constitution,” she lamented.

On the occasion, Muslim Sahitya Prashasti-2014 instituted by MLS in memory of Late UT Fareed was conferred on Sanavullah Navilehal, Davanagere for his work ‘Onti Marada Kelage’ Kannada writer Fakeer Mohammed Katpady was honoured as ‘senior Muslim litterateur-2015’. Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader conferred the awards.

A multi-lingual poet’s meet was also held on the occasion. Mohammed Baddur, Peruru Jaru, Jyoti Chelyaru, Abdussalam Madani, Abdurrahman Kuthethur, Ayisha UK, Shamshad Mukri presented their poems.

Umar UH, president of MLS, presided over the programme. Shaukath Ali, general secretary, welcomed. Sadeed recited Quranic verses in the beginning. BA Mohammed Ali compered the programme.

Karwar: The number of Covid-19 patients in Uttara Kannada district has gone up to 39 with seven more persons from Bhatkal testing positive for the virus on Sunday.

These seven persons include five men and two women. Among them, the youngest is 15 years and the eldest is 60 years. Rest of the patients are 50, 21, 16, 42, and 31 years old, a health bulletin said. All the new seven cases are contacts of the eight persons who were found positive on Saturday.

Of the new cases, one is an auto-rickshaw driver who had reportedly transported one of the patients. Now the administration is collecting the details of the driver’s journeys and the persons who had travelled in his auto-rickshaw. It is said that some of these persons who were confirmed positive on Sunday had travelled to Udupi and moved around in Bhatkal town to buy medicine.

The pressure on the administration is increasing with new positive cases being detected in Bhatkal town every day. After the first 11 cases, there were no new cases for 20 days. However, since Friday, there is sudden spike in the number of new cases in Bhatkal town.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Friday, hit out at JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, accusing the former Chief Minister of pursuing "vote bank" politics and advised him to move to Pakistan.

"It is better to move to Pakistan...if he shows so much love towards Pakistan, why should he live in India? He should not do dual politics like this. He wants to be fair to Pakistan and also to India," Sriramulu said.

Terming it as "double standards", the Minister said: "From so many years, you have been doing vote bank politics. You have to understand one thing...you are the son of former Prime Minister and also a former Chief Minister. By giving these type of statements, I think it will hurt the citizens of India. If you want to do vote bank politics I must suggest that it is better to leave the country."

His statement comes after Kumaraswamy took a jibe at BJP over its "obsession with Pakistan".

Shivamogga, May 21: An FIR has been registered against Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district of Karnataka over tweets on May 11 by the party's official handle about PM-CARES fund.

The FIR, registered under Sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), identifies Gandhi as the handler of the social media account.

The complaint by advocate Praveen KV alleged that the Congress party, through the tweets, has made rumourous statements against the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was trying to provoke the people against the government.

According to the FIR, the Congress party had on May 11, 2020, made false and baseless allegations, claimed misappropriation of PM-CARES Fund and cast aspersions on the Government of India through the tweets.

"A Twitter account handled by All India Congress Committee headed by Sonia Gandhi had on May 11, 2020, published tweets terming PM CARES Fund as PM CARES Fraud. They had claimed that the PM CARES fund is not being used for the public," Praveen KV told ANI on Thursday.

He said that he has collected all the details related to the tweets and account from the handle and filed a complaint in the matter, following which a preliminary enquiry was conducted and an FIR was registered in the matter.

"They had also said that the Prime Minister was enjoying and going to foreign trips with this fund. This is clearly rumourous news against the Government of India in this COVID-19 pandemic situation. In this regard, I had filed a complaint. After a primary enquiry, the Sagar Police has filed an FIR against Sonia Gandhi, who heads the INC Twitter account," Praveen KV said.
