My singing is gift of God, it’s not anti-Islam: Nahid Afrin

March 16, 2017

Guwahati, Mar 16: Teen singer Nahid Afrin of Indian Idol fame seemed unfazed on Wednesday by an alleged fatwa a group of Islamic clerics issued banning her from performing in any public entertainment event.

NahidIn the first such edict issued in Assam, the alleged fatwa asked the 16-year-old to stay away from a musical programme, to be held on March 25, claiming the event was “against Sharia”.

The diktat was circulated through pamphlets which was widely distributed among public across Hojai and Nagaon districts in central Assam on Tuesday.

Assam chief minister Sarbanand Sonowal condemned the ‘fatwa’ and directed police to provide security to the singer.

Sonowal had a telephonic conversation with Nahid and assured her of all steps to ensure her security so that she can continue pursuing her vocation and bring laurels to the state.

In a statement, Sonowal said, “Such a ruling against practising art and culture is unacceptable and is tantamount to infringement of one’s freedom of cultural rights. Such a move cannot be tolerated in a civilised society”.

Printed in Assamese and carrying names of 46 clerics, organisations and individuals, the leaflets said entertainment events “corrupt” future generations.

The leaflet said, “Magic, dance, drama, theatre, etc are against Sharia laws. Events like musical shows are against Sharia, law and future generations will be corrupted by it.”

“If anti-Sharia acts like musical nights are held on grounds surrounded by masjids, idgahs, madrassas and graveyards, our future generations will attract the wrath of Allah,” the pamphlets read.

The class X student and musical sensation from the state was scheduled to participate in a musical show to be held at Udali Sonai Bibi College in Lanka area of Nagaon district on March 25.

On hearing of the ‘fatwa’, Nahid, who lives in Biswanath Chariali, initially broke down and said “I am speechless”.

However, on Wednesday, she said, “I think my music is God’s gift to me. I will never bow to it (such warnings) and never leave singing”.

“Being a practising Muslim, I do not believe singing is anti-Islam.”

“My singing is gift of God. I believe it must be properly utilised, not doing so would be ignoring God,” she said, adding, “My father too told me our religious leaders said I can continue singing.”

Taking note of the leaflets, the police said the matter is being investigated.

It is also being ascertained if the ‘fatwa’ is in reaction to Nahid’s recent songs against terrorism and the Islamic State, said a police officer, adding she and her family would be provided security cover.

Nahid’s mother said the organisers of the March 25 event had told her family that the programme will not be cancelled because of the alleged fatwa.

Nahid had made her Bollywood debut last year singing in the film ‘Akira’ for Sonakshi Sinha who as a judge in the TV reality show had promised to have the teenager to do playback singing for her in her next movie, her mother said.

Meanwhile, some of those named in the leaflet have denied they are part of the diktat claiming their names were included without their consent.

Coming out in support of Nahid, several prominent personalities from the minority community, students and ethnic organisations as well as ULFA faction in peace talks with the Centre, have condemned the ‘fatwa’ and urged Nahid to continue singing fearlessly.

Mumbai, Jul 6: Mumbai Police on Monday recorded the statement of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death.

The director arrived at Bandra Police Station on Monday morning to give his statement.

As per reports, late actor Sushant was approached by Bhansali for his 2013 film "Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela". However, Sushant could not take up the offer reportedly due to his contract with a production house. Later Ranveer Singh was signed for the role. The female lead was played by Deepika Padukone and the film turned out to be a commercial success.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police has, over the past weeks, recorded statements of Sushant's family, staff, a few of his friends, and Rhea Chakraborty, besides filmmaker Mukesh Chhabra and actress Sanjana Sanghi who worked with the late actor in his upcoming last film "Dil Bechara".

Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging in his Mumbai residence on June 14. The actor's postmortem report stated his death was a suicide.

Within a few days of the actor's death, a complaint was filed by advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Bihar's Muzaffarpur. The case filed regarding the actor's death was against eight Bollywood personalities including Bhansali, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra and Ekta Kapoor.

Mumbai Police is investigating the death of the actor, though many fans on social media have been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case.

Mumbai, Jun 9: Actor Sonu Sood, who has been arranging transport for migrant workers stranded in Mumbai and has faced criticism from the Shiv Sena for "enacting a political script written by BJP", was stopped outside the Bandra Terminus in Mumbai by police from meeting labourers.

A Mumbai Police official said the actor was stopped by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) when he reached the station on Monday night to meet some labourers, and added that they have not received any complaint so far in this connection.

The migrant labourers were supposed to take the Shramik Special train from Bandra Terminus to Uttar Pradesh.

Mumbai's Nirmal Nagar police station's senior inspector Shashikant Bhandare told news agency PTI that "The actor was stopped by the RPF, not by us. He wanted to meet labourers who were going to their native place. We have not received any complaint regarding this till now."

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday wondered whether the BJP propped up Sonu Sood to "offer help" to migrant workers from north India stranded in Maharashtra amidst the lockdown, with the political motive to show the Uddhav Thackeray government in poor light.

In his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', Sanjay Raut questioned the sudden rise of "Mahatma" Sood on the social scene of Maharashtra during the lockdown.

Mr Raut also referred to an alleged "sting operation" against Sonu Sood ahead of the 2019 general elections, saying he had agreed to promote the BJP-led government at various platforms through his official social media accounts.

However, later that day Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray lauded Sonu Sood's initiative to arrange buses for stranded migrant workers.

The actor met Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's residence 'Matoshree' in suburban Bandra on Sunday night.

On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh backed Sonu Sood for his work for stranded migrant workers, and questioned the Maharashtra government's criticism of the actor.
