Name Bengaluru or Mangalore Airport after Tipu Sultan'

Mangalore, July 24: Indian Union Muslim League has urged the Union Government to rename either Bengaluru International Airport or Mangalore Airport after Tipu Sultan.

In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the local unit of IUML stated that it was ungratefulness to forget Tippu Sultan the 'father of secularism in India' and torch bearer of India's struggle for independence.

The Civil Aviation Ministry, earlier this year, had accepted a proposal to name Bengaluru International Airport after founder of this garden city Kempegowda. Pointing out that there were several statues of Kempegowda and many locations were also named after him, IUML said that Tipu Sultan's name was more appropriate for the airport as Devanahalli, where it is located, was the Sultan's birthplace.

If the Government failed to name Bengaluru International Airport after Sultan, at least Mangalore Airport should be named after him, the memorandum urged.

It is a minimum homage to the great martyr, who laid his life in the battle field to defend the nation against the foreign aggressors, it added.

The IMUL delegation which submitted the memorandum to District Administration comprised of District Vice President C Ahmed Jamal, District Secretary Mohammed Ismaeel, City Secretary Ibrahim Bengare among others.

Bengaluru, May 8: 45 more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Karnataka, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 750, the state Health Department said on Friday.

According to the Health Department, the total cases include 371 discharged cases and 30 deaths.

Mangaluru, Jul 11: Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has set up an expert committee to look into the cause of deaths of covid patients in Dakshina Kannada.

The development comes after eight more fatalities including that of a CISF personnel attached to MRPL, were reported in the district on Friday.

The district has recorded 23 deaths since July 1 and 38 death cases have been reported in the district since April 19.

Of the 38 deaths, five were from outside the district. All the eight patients, who lost their battle to the virus in the district on Friday, were suffering from co-morbidities.

According to the govt bulletin on Covid-19 cases, comorbid conditions, like kidney failure, brain tumour, TB, pneumonia, liver damage, high BP, diabetes and others, were the main reasons behind the Covid-19 deaths reported in the district.

Mangaluru, June 10: Former minister and Mangaluru MLA U T Khader has hit out at the Karnataka government for what he opined that it is misusing the Epidemic Diseases Act to target opposition parties. 

The statement comes in the backdrop of state government’s move to scuttle oath taking ceremony of KPCC president designate D K Shivakumar.

Asserting that the oath taking will be a grand affair, Mr Khader said that Congress will not be browbeaten by the tactics of the BJP.

Citing the blatant violation of all norms laid down under the Act by minister for health B R Sriramulu at Chitradurga earlier this month, Khader told reporters that the BJP is using the Act for its narrow political gains.

“KPCC has twice deferred swearing in ceremony of Shivakumar after being given the oral go ahead,” Khader claimed, adding the state government must explain to people the issue it has with the Congress organising this function.

Referring to the back-to-back virtual political rallies – one for Bihar and the other for Odisha – on Sunday and Monday that union home minister Amit Shah conducted, Khader wondered if the Act did not apply to the BJP leadership.
