Mangaluru, Sep 15: In an unexpected development, the Karnataka high court on Thursday granted conditional bail to NaMo Brigade leader Naresh Shenoy, the prime accused in Mangaluru-based RTI activist Vinayaka P Baliga murder case.

shenoy39-year-old NaMo Naresh', who is a prominent businessman in Mangaluru, was formally arrested by the Mangaluru CCB on June 26 more than three months after 52-year-old Baliga was hacked to death in the heart of the coastal city on March 21.

On Thursday, allowing the bail petition filed by NaMo Naresh, Justice B Sreenivase Gowda directed the petitioner to furnish a personal bond for Rs 2 lakh with two local sureties to the satisfaction of the local court.

The court asked him to surrender his passport as well as visa and also not to contact authorities at Venkataramana temple or visit the same.

The petitioner has been further asked not to leave the jurisdiction of the local court without prior permission and also mark attendance before the concerned police station every Sunday and also co-operate in the investigation of the case.

NaMo Naresh, who was originally arrayed as A7 in the case as he was absconding for almost three months, has been made A1 in the charge-sheet filed before the local court.

The family members of Baliga have expressed shock over the development. An electrical contractor by profession, Baliga, through RTI had unearthed many controversial information related to electricity theft and unauthorized constructions in Mangaluru city. He had also raised the issue about alleged irregularities in the affairs of the famous Venkataramana temple in Mangaluru. More details are awaited.

There is no proof for Naresh bhai's involvement in this murder case. Mangalore police has found out the fact about the involvment of a person called Abdul Kareem in this murder case. he should be arrested immediately. But this pro-Muslim and anti-nationalist Congress govt is pressurising police to save him and fix innocent hindus. Wait for two more years. BJP will bounce back and rule karnataka. It will be a kedugaala for anti nationals.

This is really shocking. How can the prime accused in such a cold blooded murder get bail in three months? He is not only murderer. He misled police, destroyed evidence... I though court will pronounce death penalty within a year. This development is a black spot on Indian judiciary.

Udupi, June 2: The number of positive cases may continue to be more in Udupi district since the results of more than 3,000 samples are pending with Labs.

The district total cases to 260. The figure had seemed far-fetched on May 15, when the number of cases stood at just three. The latest spike has been attributed to the return of migrants from other States as well as from abroad. These samples are from people who returned to the district in the last two weeks.

This delay is because the laboratories testing samples from Udupi are burdened with a high case-load after more than 8,500 people returned to the district, particularly from the neighbouring state of Maharashtra.

"Samples have piled up after the influx of people returning from other states and from abroad," says Dr Prashant Bhat, nodal officer for COVID-19 in Udupi. This delay has caused returnees in institutional quarantine to stay on for as long as 18 days.

The designated laboratory for coronavirus testing in Udupi is Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru. The district administration also sends samples to laboratories at the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru, KS Hegde Medical Academy, Mangaluru, and Viral Diagnostic Laboratory in Shivamogga. Apart from Udupi, the laboratory in Manipal is also testing samples from Uttara Kannada district. The laboratory in Shivamogga is also testing samples from Shivamogga and Bijapur districts. The laboratories in Mangaluru, similarly, have samples from Dakshina Kannada district.

Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital in Manipal, one of the private laboratories being used by the Udupi district administration, said that they are testing samples in batches. "We received around 600 samples today and we will be testing them now. The backlog of samples should be cleared in the next few days," Dr Avinash said.

All 73 cases reported in Udupi on Monday were patients with travel history of returning from Maharashtra or patients with travel history of returning from abroad.

In cases of some patients who tested coronavirus positive in the past week, people were released from institutional quarantine after a stipulated period only to be tracked down again and admitted in hospitals after their results returned positive.

While two such cases emerged in Belapu and Belman in the district, the administration is now following up with others who were released from institutional quarantine to ensure they remain in home quarantine till their test results are confirmed.

The spike in cases among returning migrants in Udupi also comes at a time the Karnataka government reduced restrictions on interstate travel.

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.
