Mangaluru, Oct 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in coastal Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday to take part in various functions.

Mr. Modi landed at the Mangaluru airport from New Delhi and flew to Dharmasthala in a helicopter. The Prime Minister offered prayers at the Manjunatheshwara Temple in Dharmasthala.

Mr Modi is the first sitting PM to visit Dharmasthala temple. Though Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had offered prayers in the same temple in the past, they were not PMs during their visit.

On account of the Prime Minister’s visit, the temple administration has restricted public entry till 2 p.m. on October 29.

Mr. Modi will later address a public rally at Ujjire town near Dharmasthala and hand over RuPay cards to the Pradhan Mantri Jan Than Yojana (PMJDY) account holders.

Later in the day, Mr. Modi will fly to Bengaluru to attend a public function organised by the Vedanta Bharati at the Palace Grounds.

In the evening, he would inaugurate the 110-km Bidar-Kalaburgi railway track in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region that would reduce the distance between Bengaluru and New Delhi by 380-km and travel time by six to eight hours.

Tight Security

Security has been tightened in Dharmasthala and Ujire in the wake of Modi’s visit.

The personnel of the elite Special Protection Group have been keeping vigil on strategic points in the town. Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad teams have also been stationed.

The Public Works department has constructed two helipads at a cost of Rs 15 lakh in Dharmasthala. All the vehicles from Mangaluru to Dharmasthala should ply via Mangaluru-BC Road-Uppinangady-Nelyadi-Periyashanthi-Kokkada-Niddle-Dharmasthala.

Mangaluru, Apr 28: Trucks carrying fish loads from Kerala will not be allowed to enter Dakshina Kannada district as the authorities are not being able to control the rush in markets, state Fisheries Minister and district-in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary said Monday.

The deputy commissioner has been instructed to restrict the entry of fish transport vehicles from outside the district forthwith, in view of the difficulty in maintaining social distancing at the markets identified in the district, the minister told reporters here.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The father of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma, whose body was pulled out of a drain in northeast Delhi's riot-hit Chand Bagh, complained to police that goons had assembled at the residence of former AAP counselor Tahir Hussain and were throwing petrol bombs from the rooftop.

According to the FIR which was registered on Thursday on the basis of the complaint lodged by Ankit's father Ravinder, the goons were also firing from the rooftop.

On Tuesday, Ankit returned from his office at 5 pm and then went outside to buy groceries. When he did not return, the family started looking for him and later filed a missing report, the FIR stated.

They got to know from their neighbours that a body has been recovered from a drain… later it was found to be that of Anikt, it said, adding the body had multiple stab injuries on the face, head, back, and chest.

The family has alleged in the FIR that it was Hussain and the goons at his residence who killed Ankit. In the FIR, Hussain has been accused of murder, destruction of evidence and abduction.

Soon after the FIR was registered on Thursday, the AAP suspended Tahir Hussain from the primary membership of the party till the police completed its probe.

The death toll in Delhi's communal violence rose to 42 on Friday as the situation showed some signs of returning to normalcy and clouds of smoke cleared to reveal the extent of the damage from the worst riots in the city in over three decades.

A total of 148 FIRs have been registered and 630 people have been either arrested or detained so far in connection with the communal violence, a Delhi Police spokesperson said.
