Narsingh Yadav doping controversy: No clarity when NADA will announce final verdict

July 30, 2016

New Delhi, Jul 30: A day after Narsingh Yadav's dope scandal hearing got over, there was no clarity today over when the NADA's Anti-Doping Disciplinary Penal will announce its final verdict, which will decide the wrestler's Rio Olympics fate.

dopingAfter the conclusion of the two-day hearing on Narsingh's dope positive case on Thursday, the NADA counsel had said that the verdict would come either Saturday or on August 1.

But there is still no clarity on whether the verdict will come tomorrow or on Monday. When contacted, the counsels of both NADA and Narsingh said they have not been told when the panel would give its final decision.

Wrestling Federation of India is also clueless when the verdict will come.

"We have not been told when the verdict will come. It may be tomorrow or Monday but we don't know when," a Wrestling Federation of Indian source said.

"There is a 50-50 chance that he might be let off with a warning or may be handed a ban by the NADA disciplinary panel," the source said.

As per the revised NADA Code of 2015, the maximum sanction for a first-time offence is four years.

Narsingh's lawyers had presented their case on Wednesday, arguing that there was a conspiracy against the grappler while the NADA's legal team gave its arguments against the sabotage theory before the disciplinary panel yesterday.

"The argument by NADA was that he is not eligible for remission which he has been asking. Narsingh did not produce the relevant circumstantial evidence that there could have been sabotage as had been claimed by them," NADA's lawyer Gaurang Kanth told reporters at the end of the hearing yesterday.

"They filed an affidavit that his drinks or water was spiked but they did not produce the evidence to prove it to satisfy NADA and WADA," he argued.

The wrestler, who has alleged the involvement of fellow grapplers in the conspiracy, has already been replaced by Parveen Rana in the Olympic bound squad but will be reinstated if he gets a favourable verdict from NADA.

NADA's lawyer, however, said that Narsingh's claims of conspiracy are not backed by sufficient proof.

"We argued that the requirements of due diligence and care which was needed to escape from punishment was not provided as to satisfy the WADA Code. So we said he should be given punishment as appropriate this panel thinks fit," Kanth had said.

New Delhi, Apr 24: India's World Cup-winning former opener Gautam Gambhir performed the last rites of his deceased domestic help after her mortal remains could not be sent to her home in Odisha due to the coronavirus-forced national lockdown.

Gambhir, also a BJP Lok Sabha MP, posted a tribute on his Twitter page for his employee Saraswati Patra, who was working at his residence for the past six years.

"Taking care of my little one can never be domestic help. She was family. Performing her last rites was my duty," he tweeted.

"Always believed in dignity irrespective of caste, creed, religion or social status. Only way to create a better society. That's my idea of India! Om Shanti," said the 38-year-old Gambhir, who played 58 Tests for India between 2004 and 2016.

Media reports in Odisha said the 49-year-old Patra hailed from a village in Jajpur district.

She was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital a few days ago and was battling diabetes and high blood pressure for a long period. She breathed her last while undergoing treatment on April 21.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan appreciated Gambhir.

"Taking care of Saraswati throughout the course of her illness, he also ensured her dignity in death by performing her last rites himself since her mortal remains could not be sent to her family back home in Odisha," Pradhan, who also belongs to Odisha, tweeted.

"His act of compassion will enliven the faith in humanity for millions of poor, who are working far from their home for livelihood and will garner respect from all folds of the society."

London, Apr 8: England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has raised more than 65,000 pound (USD 80,000) to help fight the coronavirus by auctioning off his World Cup final shirt.

Buttler's shirt, which he wore when completing the last-ball run-out that saw England beat New Zealand at Lord's last year, was sold to raise money for specialist heart and lung centres provided by the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in London.

Buttler, who earlier in the showpiece match had hit a fifty and batted in the Super Over, put his long-sleeve keeping jersey up for sale on eBay a week ago.

By the time the auction closed on Tuesday, the shirt had attracted 82 bids with the winner paying 65,100 pound.

Buttler, speaking on Monday, said: "It's a very special shirt but I think it takes on extra meaning with it being able to hopefully go to the emergency cause.
